Heavily agreed. Hell, just an updated transfer would be outstanding.

Criterion Announces The 400 Blows and The Last Metro Blu-rays

Posted December 17, 2008 01:38 PM by Josh Dreuth

Criterion The Criterion Collection has added two titles to their list of upcoming Blu-ray releases. On March 24th they will release François Truffaut's 'The 400 Blows' and 'The Last Metro' in stunning high definition. Both titles will be released in OAR via 1080p AVC video accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

No special features have been announced at this time, but you can expect to see similar features as found on the existing Criterion DVD releases.

Man, give me as much Kurosawa on Blu Ray as possible. Ran? Are you kidding me??? That would be AMAZING on Blu!

Hell, I'd love to see how much more they could clean up Seven Samurai. That's one of my 10 favorite movies, and I'd definitely add that one to my collection.

iirc when they announce that they will go blu, Criterion included a short list of titles that includes Wages of Fear. But it's still no (that I know of) release date or anything yet.

The Third Man BD isn't windowboxed, I seriously doubt Seven Samurai would be.

The Third Man is windowboxed, it even says so in the booklet. Overscan would account for it not showing up though.

The booklet's wrong. It's pillarboxed, of course, being an Academy standard film and all, but there are absolutely no bars -- none at all -- on the top or bottom of the image. I've confirmed this on a 1:1 1080p screen as well as by playing the movie in a window (meaning no overscan at all) on my PC.

The Beaver says it's not windowboxed. That's good news, I'll be more likely to upgrade titles to Blu-ray knowing their done correctly.

Criterion stopped windowboxing a year ago or more.

Out of their 2008 releases, I count 17 in Academy ratio, of which all but four were pictureboxed. I'm assuming they won't use the practice for BD because the stated reason for pictureboxing (overscan) is less of an issue in HD (not a non-issue, to be sure, but not as big a problem as it once was) and because their Third Man BD wasn't pictureboxed even though the DVD was.

Take it just as a rumor, but if these 3 films get the Criterion treatment for the BD release, they will be must buy for me.
Any update on this? I just got a crazy itch about these films and would like to see the Blu-rays if I were to watch them again...
