Not even Fry's has an ad for it.

I don't think Fry's is even carrying it which is weird. They had none of them this morning, singles or box, and they weren't in their system. Also have noting on their site.

Saw at Best Buy for around $100... I think I'll wait for the 25% off sale at DeepDiscount. That will be around $70.

kevin75 11-06-08 09:53 AM

well darn, now i am torn. i am not sure whether i really want the movies past 'beneath' but the book that's in that box set is REALLY tempting. combine that with the fact that if i were to end up getting all five movies individually later, i am going to have to pay a lot more than if i just bought the box set, especially with the upcoming 25% off sale.

Hammer99 11-06-08 10:26 AM

Amazon just delivered the 1st one, so a 2-day delay wasn't too bad.

hasslein 11-06-08 04:24 PM

$68.89 now at DD.

kevin75 11-06-08 04:25 PM

kind of stinks that dvdplanet's price is about 5 bucks higher.

Hammer99 11-06-08 05:28 PM

Just ordered the 4 sequels at DD, I'm happy to get the 5 individuals for just a little over $100.

Why didn't you order the whole set using the new discount, for a grand total of $69?

Have you seen the boxset? Oh boy...

kevin75 11-06-08 09:11 PM

my guess would be something along the lines of my thoughts....the awkward storage and the reports of some not so great disc packaging.

Wallace666 11-06-08 09:16 PM

What is DD? Deep Discount? I don;t see it for 69, but 91.?

Never mind I figured it out.

kevin75 is right, I don't want that humongous box, don't give a damn about the book, & all reports indicate the rest of the packaging is a huge POS (discs are either falling off or can't be removed from the hubs)...plus I already ordered & received the 1st one from Amazon.

Wallace666, it's a 25% off sale at Deep Discount, look in the Bargains forum for more info or just enter 'DVDTALK' in the coupon block on the order page.

Have you seen it in person? It's not that big. And even the most critical of fans say the book is great, with lots of great photos...

I plan on putting the discs in amarays anyway... Blu-Ray packaging sucks period.

I have a new S550 Sony BR player and just tried my Netflix BR of Planet. After the animated ape gives his talk, it goes to a wait symbol for a few moments, than a blank screen and it never plays. I tried it several times.

Are there any known playback issues with Planet?

hasslein 11-22-08 04:27 PM

With Sony you definitely need the firmware upgrade to play the Apes and the Bond films.

On a side note, the 5.1 English audio on Planet is far inferior to the French 5.1 or any of the sequels. Hopefully Fox made an error & will repress....

Played fine in my S550. I do recall a short delay in the menu loading up after the java talking ape.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll re-rent it and give it another try. Perhaps it was just that disc.

kevin75 11-23-08 10:50 AM

i ended up ordering this and it looks great! those discs are a real pain to get back into the case though.

Indeed! Can't help but wonder how such an awful concept makes it onto the shelves. Aside from the hubs, I have no problem with the rest of the packaging though.

hasslein 11-23-08 11:15 AM

All you have to do is twist. They go on easily. I like the hubs, it eliminates possibility of loose discs & scratches.. Although they may wear out over time...

My S550 played the Bond films right out the box and the last time I looked (a couple of weeks ago) there was no firmware upgrade for it.

hasslein 11-23-08 03:45 PM

I don't have a Sony, but there were a lot of posts, no matter the model, that Sony players had a problem with those titles, and I read somewhere it took Sony a while, but there was a firmware upgrade... I believe it was digital bits...

Yes -- the discs use a new variant of the BD+ DRM, and require a firmware update to work.

I was unable to get these to work with PowerDVD 7, until someone kindly directed me to a secret Cyberlink URL (not accessible from their download page).

Has anyone picked up the box set for this? Was just looking over the Amazon page and it's $89...not sure if people think it will drop further.
