I was reading the AVS thread on Patton as linked in another thread and I was just wondering, is excessive DNR more visible when the film is in motion than it is in caps? I see it, but it seems like a remarkably subtle difference. Of course, I would prefer the films to look the way they're supposed to, but I was just wondering if this mistake is more noticeable otherwise.

Additionally, more examples would be nice.

Note: I searched for an existing thread to stick this in, but I found none since most of them probably used the abbreviation "DNR" and I think a search term has to have four letters. "Digital Noise Reduction" didn't turn up any general threads like this.

Let's put it this way...the larger your screen is the easier it is to notice the manipulation. And by larger I mean screens larger than 50-inch. I am certain you will be able to see more than just a subtle difference.

I enjoyed the extra color and detail in the HD DVD of 40 Year Old Virgin, but the DNR is hard to miss and in some scenes it is downright distracting. I had hoped that HD video would be the end of this practice, but it seems like studios still can't let this technology go. I've scratched Patton off my buy list because of it. It is still an upgrade over my current DVD version, but I'm not paying BD prices for stuff with that much DNR.

I suppose if you have 30 frames flipping past you a second, it might not look as bad. Might not. Haven't seen anything that wacky...except for fucking around with a PS CS2 filter on a Saturday night after being stood up.

Wow, that looks terrible. Consider me officially not buying Elf on BD if that capture is any indication.

I was just thinking the other day that Elf is a movie I'd upgrade without hesitation... but not if it looks like that. IMO, that's worse than Dark City and Patton.

Yuck, I really hope this was New Line's call, it was produced before they were folded into Warner, and that it doesn't affect upcoming titles like Dumb and Dumber. I would guess it's New Line's fault since DNR has affected some of their other titles. I know Warner gets a lot of criticism, but at least I haven't seen excessive DNR on my titles from them.
