Hancock Preview Disk and Blu-ray Live
Picked up one of these for a penny and was surprised to see it was BD Live compatible. This is my first try with BD Live on the PS3 and it has its ups and downs.
I was hoping it would be faster than the HD DVD version of online, but it is actually much slower. It took a minute after hitting the BD Live button before the load screen popped up and that took another minute to finish. They do have a much better interface compared to HD DVD and because of better storage real HD content as well.
The disc has a survey and a lot of preview trailers that can be downloaded including HD versions. The process is slow and strangely when you download a trailer and play it you still have to sit through a 1-2 minute loading bar before the trailer plays. This I don't get. I downloaded the trailer already so what am I loading for this long?
I really don't want to see this take off for extras and documentaries. I don't see the average movie watcher being patient enough to sit through all this loading just to download a video clip. Java seems much too slow to make this service practical and honestly if the discs are 50GB why isn't everything on the freaking disc in the first place.
Some of the possibilities are interesting though. Harry Potter on HD DVD had a community watch feature and if they take advantage of stuff like that and online chats with the creators of the film it could be a useful service.
However, for most people I think profile 1.1 is all you will need. The downloading is slow and one of the trailers I downloaded never would play. I hit play and it just went to a black screen. The only way I could even get back to the BD Live menu was to delete the Hancock save file from the PS3 and start over. This seems like more of a hassle than most people would want to deal with.

Personally I don't think it's that much faster after the first time. Downloads are still very, very slow and so is navigating the BD-live site. There seems to be some sort of cap on the data transfer speed.

I've tried logging in again and it is just as slow. The PS3 is the fastest out there for handling Java so I can't imagine it being any faster on a standalone player. Definitely the biggest flaw with BD Live.
