That's not going to happen. One, Eureka is run by adults, not bratty little children. Two, the basis of MoC region-locking their titles doesn't come solely from Kino. Just because Kino reneged on this deal doesn't give MoC license to back out of the region coding agreements they make with various other companies across the globe.

Interesting. Thanks for the link.

I can't imagine why MoC would agree to that, considering their release is much more desirable.

I'm tossed now. On the one hand, I'm dying to get this on BD. On the other hand, I'd love to have the MoC packaging and book.

I may just order the MoC version and force myself to get a region free player, like the Sherwood BDP-5004. There are a number of other BDs that are region locked that I've been wanting.

Decisions, decisions...

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

maybe in turn MoC can release a new pressing without the Region B encoding. Watch how many of us would buy MoC edition over Kino's.

^ in the UK of course, advertise the hell out of it that it's region free - sure, it's a pipe dream.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Well, I just ordered the MoC version. Fuck Kino.
In Canada, the Kino version would have cost me $31.49 after tax. The MoC dual-format steelbook will cost me just under $30 CAD, shipped.

You guys need to invest in a region free player. I don't regret my purchase at all.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Well, I just ordered the dual format set. Apparently there's a workaround for the number of region switches for a PC Blu-ray drive, so I can use that to watch it. If I find it doesn't work, I'll order the Sherwood player.

Actually, I almost did order the Sherwood, until I realized it doesn't have optical out, only coaxial or analog.

AnyDVD HD works great with Region B discs via HTPC.

My UK steelbook shipped this morning via Royal Air Mail.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

So who's actually watched this version yet?

I've never seen Metropolis before. I only really got interested in finally watching it when that new footage was found. So it's been a long wait. According to the booklet that came with the Kino edition that there isn't just new footage, but the film is edited differently as well. Thanks to looking at Huppertz's score and notes and matching it with the 16mm version. How different is the cut outside of the new scenes?

And what still confuses the hell out of me is this whole film speed debate. It seems to always be mentioned that the run time of the film when it premiered was 153 minutes. This latest cut is very close to that time but because it's still missing scenes it is shorter (147 mins). It appears to run at 24 FPS. And the original score seems to link up perfectly fine at this speed.

It seems Lang left nothing that indicates exactly what the deal is, but of course running the film at a lower FPS makes the movements more natural. But that doesn't mean it was his intention, especially if it really did premiere at a length of 153 minutes. Are people still heavily debating this?

I read that the US release has a lenticular slipcover. Can someone please post a pic of it? Thanks.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

The original score was composed to sync with 24 fps projection. At the time, sped-up motion was not something that bothered audiences, who perceived movies as being something completely "different" than reality anyway.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Don't know how I missed this, but DVD Savant had a great article about this: http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s3200frame.html

It was actually projected at 26 FPS originally and, according to one correspondence, the frame-rate was decided before the film was even shot.

It's a tricky situation, because I can see many people finding the sped up movements being comedic and undercutting the dramatic elements but if it was intended that way then going against intention is rough. The 24 FPS was not really an issue for me, I never laughed anyway. A slowed down 20 FPS version would be very interesting to watch though.

Cool! Thanks Cobra! That is one nice looking slip. Kino did a great job on their first lenticular slipbox.

My MoC copy arrived today. Might have trouble convincing the wife to watch it, though.

I guess I'm lucky. My girlfriend is just as enthused (if not moreso) to watch it as I am...

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Last night I watched a little bit of the MoC and saw a scene with women dancing in very sheer tops. I thought it was interesting to see nudity in such an old film. Great restoration work done on the film as well.

Just got this in the mail (Kino version), and I'm still miffed that Kino didn't even bother with a commentary track. Their freaking DVD had one, and they didn't even port that over - utterly pathetic. As always, Kino just does the bare minimum.

I don't really care about a commentary; I just wish German inter-titles were at least an option.
