Got all my Steelbooks today from Amazon. All perfect condition - except for the fact ever disc was loose inside.

Mine all came with slipcovers, that's all I cared about.

You know, you do have the option to not replace the case and thus not contribute to more waste and not have to blame the distributor for your unwillingness to accept a little change and put up with something slightly different.

It's not that difficult to not have a problem with it: I got one of the eco-cases today. I put it on my shelf with the rest of my Blu-ray discs and moved on with my life. Short of indoor tsunamis, I expect the disc inside that case will be just fine.
But why should I accept something that makes the Disc and Artwork more vulnerable to damage? I will admit, I have yet to crack open my Bond Collection or put my hands on an eco-case but even the idea makes me shutter.

I find it amusing that an industry that went from snapper to keep cases is now trying to be "eco-friendly". It's pure folly that they decided to do this with the most expensive format/movies on the shelves. If they were to do this with the Wal-Mart $5 crap-fest or the catalog $19.99 BR releases I don't think people would mind...just another consequence for getting a deal. But when you are shipping it with a $35+ MSRP, customers deserve a first rate package....not half a case.

Anyways back to the topic at hand. As I mentioned I have yet to open the package but watched about a half hour of the standard def version on my computer last night. I just don't get all of the flak that the QOS boat chase scene is getting around the Bond community. I'll preface this by saying that the earliest Bond movie I saw prior to QOS last November was AVTAK. Thanks to Blu-Ray prompting me to watch the series from Dr No on (filling in with the UE DVD set I have), I have quite a bit more to base my opinion on. I was surprised how a repeated viewing (right after seeing the last 15 minutes of CR) altered my opinion of it being a Bond/Bourne hybrid to just a fast paced Bond movie. I think part of the reason some people hate it is that the time flies by. Unlike past Bond movies there's not really a lull in the action so the sub-2 hour runtime just breezes by. In fact it's basically action->setup the next action sequence->repeat. Even the end of the movie feels a bit tacked on. Granted, that may very well be the case since they originally shot an ending that would have forced them to make it a trilogy (but wisely dropped it.)

Re: The Official Bond on Blu-ray Thread

Should I be selling my slipcovers? I bought them, and right into the Slappa cases they went.

haha

I did the Decorative DVD collection thing, now they are worth nothing. Haha, not even starting with the Blu Rays, everything is in a sleeve.

I agree with you that it's quite lame for them to pull this while trying to make Blu-ray a "premium" product. I just can't abide the abdication of responsibility in blaming the studio for your decision to replace the case rather than live with it. I'm temped to replace my eco-case and I'm sure many people will, but that's not the studio's decision.

Future Shop has re-listed the Bond steels but doesn't look like any stores have it yet.

The Eco cases are available on DVDs as well. But think about this - what is likely to sell more copies - QoS on Blu-ray or insert random $5 crap title? So they are being more eco-friendly by offering the cases on larger titles. Still stupid.

Re: The Official Bond on Blu-ray Thread

I don't really care that much about the eco-cases. I guess they could be more vulnerable to damage, but given that they sit on my shelf for most of their life span and I only have to look at the ugly holes in there once in awhile when I go to watch the movie, it's not really that big of an issue.

Re: The Official Bond on Blu-ray Thread

Well I already have the cases on hand...I got a deal last year on 20 HD-DVD/5 Blu cases when I needed to get the Hollywood Video HD-DVDs into normal cases and had to replace an all damaged to hell Blu I got from the Retailer freebie thing. I just hope the 3 cases will fit in the BB slip cover. And as I mentioned, I haven't opened up the pack yet nor did i even know about the cases until reading about them in this thread.

Re: The Official Bond on Blu-ray Thread

Is Never Say Never Again "worth" buying next week at Target? I've been buying and watching all the old Bond movies pretty much for the first time on Blu-ray. I know the history behind it, but do people feel that it's a solid movie and worth watching/buying to be complete?

Well, it's a remake of Thunderball, and some parts of it improve on the original, while other parts aren't as good.

Overall I would say that it's worth picking up.

Good question. I had it on DVD and sold it after watching it (I had all the other Bonds). So obviously at the time I didn't think it was that great. But for some reason I'm now tempted by it again, especially at the Target price. I must have forgot what it's like.

It's very solid. Connery is in good form, it has a great supporting cast (Basinger, Brandauer, Fox, von Sydow... Barbara Carrera chews the scenery as the henchman), it's directed by Irvin "Empire Strikes Back" Kershner. It's a very good thriller.

I'm gonna grab it at that price... but why again was this film ever made? Why re-make Thunderball? and with the same lead actor? I've never really known.

Thanks for all the thoughts! Part of the appeal is definitely the cast and Connery in the role, as so far I've really enjoyed the Connery movies i've seen (Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball) while I didn't care at all for Moore (Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only).

When watching it, do you guys think i'll be sitting there just thinking it's obviously Thunderball again, or are there enough differences for it to stand alone? The overviews i've read seem like there's a decent amount of changes.

Re: The Official Bond on Blu-ray Thread

there is a long long history about this, the short version is the writer Kevin McClory fought for in court and won the rights to any film version of the thunderball story and characters, he remade thunderball in the early 80s as never say never again, and tried for many years after to remake it yet again as warhead 2000ad for sony pictures(who badly wanted to get into the james bond bussiness). he went back to court again when the broccolis and mgm took him to court and he lost this time

thats a very abreviatted version of the story if you do a search online you can find the whole complete story on the legal battle. this is also the reason why spectre and blofeld were never again used in any bond films after diamonds are forever(except for the no name bald villian with the cat at the start of for your eyes only)
