I haven't had a chance to watch the entire disc which is why I was careful to mention it was a quick assessment at the time.

I'm inclined to say it was louder and not necessarily deeper, but I need to do some more thorough comparisons.

Also, I don't have giant subwoofers like some (just a 10" Infinity active), so there's always the possibility my sub wouldn't make it readily apparent it was deeper in terms of frequency.

Best way I can describe what I heard so far in non-technical terms is, during the shockwave scene, when the pulse goes off, there's "more there" than there was before. As far as the blue dress chick scene, I had good bass there anyway on the HD DVD, and with the BD the LFE just seemed to hang around a little longer.

Is the crackling audio still present when the Secretary of Defense is giving the 'wrap up' report at the end of the movie?

cisman 09-02-08 10:01 AM

So with all that being said it doesn't seem this is worth an upgrade for someone who has the HDDVD version and 3 working players still.

At least until the BD is much cheaper.

JimRochester 09-02-08 01:11 PM

I was just at Best Buy picking up a couple $14.99 titles and saw this on the shelf for $27.99. With a working player and good copy of the flick, I'm not upgrading until I have to. If everyone raved about the huge improvement I would be tempted at the right price. But amarginal improvement and and $28 price tag are enough to keep me happy with the HD DVD

Are you talking about just video? or audio too?

HD Digest, who previously gave the DD+ audio on the HD DVD 5 stars, had this to say:

"Paramount's previous HD DVD release of 'Transformers,' contained a high-res Dolby Digital-Plus Surround option. With this Blu-ray they've provided a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track (48kHz/24-bit). It's hard to imagine a home theater mix that could sound better."

Supermallet 09-02-08 04:26 PM

Of course, that quote doesn't say that the DD+ mix sounds significantly worse, either. In fact, most of what I've heard says that the only difference in the two mixes is a boost in bass. I, like many of the other HD DVD owners, won't be upgrading this title anytime soon.

Hey I love kick ass sound tracks. But with so many titles to upgrade, I'm spending my money on the old stuff before I upgrade another HD title.

So if we want the $10 rebate for those with the SD version, we get to cut up the plastic slipcover it came in? Not only that but it's not even at the very top edge so we get to cut it up even worse.

Giles 09-03-08 12:24 PM

my Best Buy had no copies of this  even though they had a little 29.99 sign up

RockyMtnBri 09-03-08 10:49 PM

Oh man, talk about triple dips! I had the standard def two-disc, then when I picked up a Toshiba HD-A2 last November when Wal-Mart had 'em on sale I grabbed the HD-DVD, and yesterday finally got the Blu-ray! Now I can watch it on my BIG big screen in the media room and listen to the bombastic Dolby TrueHD audio!

I watched the last 20 minutes of the DVD after I re-activated my BD Live login and downloaded the extra content. I thought the HUD was cool, especially since it shows the Transformers' transformation stage along with their health and weapons status. The pop-up trivia was a little tongue-in-cheek sometimes. The picture is phenomenal and the audio is top notch.

That sounds cool! Makes me want to test it out tonight or tomorrow.

So, has anyone who has seen the Blu version on a 50" or larger HDTV noticed the movie has less grain? Was the grain just cleaned up, versus an actually better video release?

I can't answer your question directly, but I noticed that the DLP presentation in the theater displayed grain, yet the HiDef airing on cable removed the grain... go figure.

If I looked really hard on my 58", I could sometimes find a little grain. For the most part there's nothing.

Also, the HUD is kinda cool and gives me another reason to watch.

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi 09-05-08 09:47 PM

Actually, it might just be me, but it seems like the film grain's pretty much removed in scenes with the robots. In other scenes like when the humans are all upstairs in Sam's bedroom, before the agents come, there's much more grain.

Drexl 09-05-08 09:49 PM

Oh, please don't tell me this is another DNR victim.

Nah, there were no waxy faces to speak of.

RockyMtnBri 09-05-08 10:39 PM

I watched this on my 92 inch screen - intentional film grain is there, but nothing as far as artifacts go.

DVD Polizei 09-05-08 11:53 PM

Well, I have the HD DVD version, and the small amount of grain is certainly there (as discussed in other DNR threads), but I was wondering if anyone thinks it's "cleaner" or whatever on the Blu-ray version since they've upgraded/cross-graded to the Blu version.

Gizmo 09-06-08 01:17 AM

I believe the consensus is the BD and HD have identical PQ (or close to it) even after Bay made a big stink over it.

RocShemp 09-06-08 12:21 PM

I just watched my BD copy and the video is identical. I'm watching this on a 52" screen and there's a whole lot of grain on both the BD and HD DVD (which is exactly how the film looked the five times I saw it in theaters).

The audio, on the other hand has improved. But it's not a night and day change. Although the TrueHD track is superior (the bass is fuller and the sound somewhat less bright overall), I'd still call the DD+ reference quality.

The only reasons to get this release is if you don't have the HD DVD or you want a slight improvement in terms of audio. I definitely fit into the latter but YMMV.

I'm gonna use my small cutting mat and a book to fill out the sleeve and then use my X-acto knife. Hopefully it will be a clean process.

My local Walmart* had it for $24.95. :D

Question: Where is the PoP on the Transformer DVD packaging that has the transformable case?
