So the only thing new is 2 lossless tracks?

What would be missing?

...just asking if anything is new besides the audio tracks. I don't have my HD DVD copy with me to compare.

You mean you don't keep it on your person at all times? :)

Gizmo 05-28-08 01:32 PM

No. The movie is not even that good so I never understood why it was wanted so bad  I think ive watched my copy twice.

tonymontana313 05-28-08 02:32 PM

Looks like all internet features were ported over as well. Don't understand the point of two lossless tracks but will most definitely be a first day purchase.

It's possible that the PCM track could be 16-bit while the TrueHD track could be 24-bit, as is the case with some of Sony's titles. There are still some people who have early players not capable of decoding TrueHD, so that's a way of throwing them a bone. I believe Sony has switched over completely to TrueHD now, but for a little while they were offering both.

Gizmo 05-28-08 02:46 PM

Sony is TrueHD now. They have dropped PCM completley.

RichC2 05-28-08 03:34 PM

Smart move

naitram 05-28-08 03:49 PM

Won't double-dip for lossless, but good news for the Blu-only folks.

The Edit King 05-28-08 04:03 PM

Me neither. I'm most pleased with my HD DVD copy, thank y'all very much!

But the Babe in the film is nice to watch over & over again.

(...if only her thumbs didn't look like toes, all would be well with the world.)

Mr. Cinema 05-28-08 04:38 PM

HD Digest mentions only a TrueHD track.

No, seriously. I've always heard the term "double blind test" but never really knew what it meant.

It's where both the researchers and the subjects are unaware of which is the experimental and which is the control group. In this sense, both you (the listener) and the person with the remote would be in the dark as to which is the lossy track and which is the lossless.

This would be very hard to do with one disc, since I believe the selector would have to cycle through the tracks. The problem is, on discs with PCM and even some with TrueHD (Warner's titles), the lossy track is the default, so that's track 1, with the lossless being track 2. So, if there's a commentary or foreign language track, the only switching that can be done is from track 1 to track 2 (not vice versa), and you already know that track 2 is the lossless one.

Then, you have discs where the lossless is the default, with a core (DTS) or parallel (DD) track that only plays if the equipment doesn't support lossless. How you would go about switching between those, I don't know. Maybe switch between HDMI and optical output? So, you might need a disc with only 2 separated tracks. I'll go through my collection and see if I can find any.

The other way would be with 2 discs in separate players, with the input assignments unknown to the selector. They may even have to be unknown to you, if the players are different and you know what input goes with what.

Frankly, I think the single-blind test would be good enough. As long as the selector stays out of sight and keeps his mouth shut, he shouldn't be injecting any bias into the experiment.

Supermallet 05-28-08 09:43 PM

Yes, when you put it that way, a single blind test would be sufficient.

RocShemp 05-28-08 11:55 PM

I see. Thanks for explaining it to me, Drexl. :)

I was excited about this when it came to HD DVD because I enjoyed it in the theaters...and then when I started watching it on HD DVD I fell asleep during the movie....sold it the next day....

Funny - it was the opposite for me.

Was not too crazy about it in the theater (even though the presentation in DLP was kick ass), but when I saw it again at home I liked it better the second time. Probably my expectations being gone helped.

Yeah, I don't like Cloverfield either.

Last I checked, Amazon was asking like $28 for this. Is there anywhere else it might be up for preorder a bit cheaper? or should I just reserve it at Amazon and hope they drop the price closer to release date?

I understand Amazon will automatch if the price drops elsewhere (and is pointed out by somebody I suppose).

RocShemp 07-15-08 09:16 PM

Cool. I may just preorder it from them, in that case. Thanks, Superman07.

Mr. Cinema 08-12-08 06:21 AM

DVD Empire has a scan of the back cover, confirming there is only a TrueHD track.

Ocelot 08-12-08 09:22 AM

Skip... HD-DVD version is good enough for me. The movie is entertaining, but not good enough to double dip. Will get it when my add-on dies...

RocShemp 08-12-08 09:08 PM

Lossless is lossless so I'm okay with just a TrueHD track. Besides, with the lack of a PCM track they can either maximize the bitrate of the video or cram in some extra features.
