I'm assuming that at least everything that is a Janus film release will eventually be on blu. Janus films is their own company. Also look at dvd titles with new high def transfers which are good candidates.

hehe me too.

I was hoping that the October Blu-ray releases would be detailed - which of the existing list are being released first. I waited for the DVD october titles to be announced on the Criterion site, thinking the blu-rays would be amongst them, but no such luck only the DVDs were listed.

I'm not sure if this is the distinction you meant to draw, but the announced list of CC-BDs includes "new" titles (Chungking Express and Bottle Rocket, for example) as well as catalog titles (The 3rd Man, Contempt, etc.). The "new" titles will also get a standard SD release.

They usually put the details up on their site mid month, 3 months prior.

So for the first batch due in November, details should be posted in the next few days (if they are following the announcement DVD pattern)

Looks like the release schedule is going to be one or two a month.

Damn, I was hoping there was an announcement. I'm crossing my fingers for Bottle Rocket and Chungking Express as the first 2. Then they can release their catalog titles I have no interest in.

So it's not all of those titles, and THEN one or two a month?

Bottle Rocket will be one of the first release to tie-in with the DVD release...I hope.

Is there significant value for the average Criterion fan to having films made available in high-def?

Absolutely. There's a luminous quality to real film, and HD resolution captures that. I particularly love black-and-white [films] in HD. They're gorgeous, and that's one of the big secrets of Blu-ray: how good black-and-white movies look.

My guess would be that those titles which have already been released, or are planned for release, elsewhere in the world would be first, so I'm going to bet on 400 Blows and Chungking Express being their debuts.

Go PS3!

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10016208-1.html

It goes without saying that the folks who work at Criterion Collection are film buffs. And anyone who has watched one of the company's lovingly remastered DVDs can attest to the fact the company really cares about making films look as good as they can. That's why we took notice when a poster at AVS Forum pointed out an interesting tidbit in Sound & Vision's recent profile of Criterion Collection's new high-def home theater--Criterion's reference Blu-ray player is a PS3.

We're not exactly surprised. We've been using the PS3 as our reference Blu-ray player at CNET since it was released, and you'll notice that it tops our best Blu-ray players list by quite a margin. Furthermore, it's worth noting that video quality expert Joe Kane help set up Criterion's new home theater room. When we checked out Joe Kane's demo of the truly awesome SP-A800B at CES, we specifically asked what Blu-ray player he thought had the best image quality, he immediately said the PS3. So if you're worried about the image quality of a "game console" versus a high-end standalone Blu-ray player, it's worth rechecking your assumptions when CNET, Criterion and Joe Kane all vouch for the PS3's excellent performance.

Another interesting piece of gear we noted from the S&V article is a DVI Gear HDMI cable. That's right, the image quality experts at Criterion opt for the relatively cheap DVI Gear brand rather than splurge on a $275 Monster cable. Again, that's no surprise to us, as we even recommended a $2 DVI Gear cable in our Quick Guide to HDMI cables. If the image quality experts at Criterion and CNET both agree that inexpensive cables generally perform just as well as more expensive cables, we're betting those cables are okay for your home theater too.
