I really wish they would release all new titles on Blu Ray at the same time. That might be happening since Bottle Rocket is mentioned.

And I vote for a dual numbering system. One that corresponds with the original DVDs on the bottom and one for the Blus at the top.

I don't really mind the blue cases, but I wish they'd all use the same ones.

I hate the WB/Fox ones where you constantly have to screw with the art to get the spine lined up correctly.

The Disney/Sony/LG ones are much better with the art fitting properly.

I haven't had too many problems with WB cases, but Fox releases never seem to have the spine lined up. But I found this was true of Fox DVDs too.

Please tell me if this is a repost, because I searched the forum and couldn't find squat. Either way, here it is:

May 8, 2008

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall: our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

    Enjoy spring!

Own almost all of them on DVD already so only CHUNGKING and WALKABOUT for me. I want 400 BLOWS too but hopefully there will be a remastered box of all the Doinel films at some point.

Maybe from now on there will be concurrent BD/DVD releases. Kinda want BREATHLESS and DAYS OF HEAVEN BD announcements soon because I have the receipts for the unopened DVDs...

Too bad there's no talk of a colourized version of Wages of Fear. :D

What are the prices going to be like? If you add about $10 to the final prices of the standard DVD Criterion editions of these dvds, this is what I'm guessing what these Blu-rays will cost at retail:

    The Third Man: $45
    Bottle Rocket: $30
    Chungking Express: $30
The Man Who Fell to Earth: $35
    The Last Emperor: $50
    El Norte: $40
    The 400 Blows: $35
    Gimme Shelter: $40
    The Complete Monterey Pop: $90
    Contempt: $40
    Walkabout: $32
    For All Mankind: $40
    The Wages of Fear: $45

Do these prices seem realistic? I can't imagine them costing $20 more than their SD counterparts.

They're priced the same as the SD Criterions, actually.

True, but we'll have to wait and see how the retailers handle them WRT discounting. They generally don't discount the DVDs that much, so they may end up costing us the same.

I think Amazon will come through with some good discounts.

For me Ran and Seven Samurai are titles I'd really like to see on Blu Ray...

I've never seen The Third Man, but had been considering buying it on DVD - now I'll hold off for the Blu Ray. (One thing that's held me back is the Harry Lime radio show that Orson Welles did - I've heard a handful of episodes and didn't really like them, and I love old time radio so I hope the movie is a little different from the radio series.)

Out of all the films on that list, The Man Who Fell To Earth is by far the one I'm most excited about.

David Bowie's junk = no sale

Same here, Roeg's films are definitely an acquired taste, I am hoping they all make blu-ray because once they hit you, they hit you deeply.

I would also love to see Ran, Seven Samurai and Kagemusha on BD. As for The Third Man, you are in for a serious treat. This is easily in my top 10 favorite films of all-time.

 for The Third Man. I almost pulled the trigger on the standard release a few weeks back - glad I held out. Can't wait to own it on Blu-ray. I'll be picking up The Last Emperor and For All Mankind as well. Fortunately with most of Criterion's releases, almost NONE of them will be double dips for me. I'm hoping we'll get Brazil soon!

    Lipid 07-21-08 03:32 PM

Did Criterion mention if they are going to re-release EVERY title that's currently on DVD to Blu-ray?

I'd hate to wait on buying some of the DVDs during the DDD sale in expectations of buying the blu-ray later only to find out they lost the rights or never had any intention of releasing Film B on Blu-ray.

Do you think any major studio could seriously make a commitment like that? Just roll the dice and see where they fall.

No studio could possibly do that. I'm sure Criterion will release new titles mixed in with some older releases they still have the rights to.
