I agree.

True, but we'll have to wait and see how the retailers handle them WRT discounting. They generally don't discount the DVDs that much, so they may end up costing us the same.

I think Amazon will come through with some good discounts.

For me Ran and Seven Samurai are titles I'd really like to see on Blu Ray...

I've never seen The Third Man, but had been considering buying it on DVD - now I'll hold off for the Blu Ray. (One thing that's held me back is the Harry Lime radio show that Orson Welles did - I've heard a handful of episodes and didn't really like them, and I love old time radio so I hope the movie is a little different from the radio series.)

Out of all the films on that list, The Man Who Fell To Earth is by far the one I'm most excited about.

vcuram 07-04-08 06:15 PM

David Bowie's junk = no sale

Same here, Roeg's films are definitely an acquired taste, I am hoping they all make blu-ray because once they hit you, they hit you deeply.

I would also love to see Ran, Seven Samurai and Kagemusha on BD. As for The Third Man, you are in for a serious treat. This is easily in my top 10 favorite films of all-time.

 for The Third Man. I almost pulled the trigger on the standard release a few weeks back - glad I held out. Can't wait to own it on Blu-ray. I'll be picking up The Last Emperor and For All Mankind as well. Fortunately with most of Criterion's releases, almost NONE of them will be double dips for me. I'm hoping we'll get Brazil soon!

Lipid 07-21-08 03:32 PM

Did Criterion mention if they are going to re-release EVERY title that's currently on DVD to Blu-ray?

I'd hate to wait on buying some of the DVDs during the DDD sale in expectations of buying the blu-ray later only to find out they lost the rights or never had any intention of releasing Film B on Blu-ray.

Do you think any major studio could seriously make a commitment like that? Just roll the dice and see where they fall.

No studio could possibly do that. I'm sure Criterion will release new titles mixed in with some older releases they still have the rights to.

g 07-21-08 10:40 PM

I'm assuming that at least everything that is a Janus film release will eventually be on blu. Janus films is their own company. Also look at dvd titles with new high def transfers which are good candidates.

gryffinmaster 07-21-08 10:46 PM

Crap. I thought (read: hoped) this thread got bumped for further announcements / artwork. :(

HumanMedia 07-21-08 11:34 PM

hehe me too.

I was hoping that the October Blu-ray releases would be detailed - which of the existing list are being released first. I waited for the DVD october titles to be announced on the Criterion site, thinking the blu-rays would be amongst them, but no such luck only the DVDs were listed.

PopcornTreeCt 07-22-08 08:28 PM

They are now the November Criterion Blu-rays.

Giles 08-11-08 01:37 PM

so has Criterion made any sort of new announcement if bluray titles will be catalog titles AND new titles?

Richard Malloy 08-11-08 01:51 PM

I'm not sure if this is the distinction you meant to draw, but the announced list of CC-BDs includes "new" titles (Chungking Express and Bottle Rocket, for example) as well as catalog titles (The 3rd Man, Contempt, etc.). The "new" titles will also get a standard SD release.

Giles 08-11-08 02:03 PM

"new": as in first time release from Criterion.

PopcornTreeCt 08-12-08 02:42 PM

Then yes. Chungking Express should look great. I really hope we get some sorta announcement at the end of this week.

Giles 08-12-08 03:06 PM

the latest Sound & Vision continues the Criterion story with the studio theatre system installation up and running, a mini interview and word that Bottle Rocket looks great in 'blu' - oh, come on Criterion put up the pre-orders!!!

Or at least post some cover art!

They usually put the details up on their site mid month, 3 months prior.

So for the first batch due in November, details should be posted in the next few days (if they are following the announcement DVD pattern)

NoirFan 08-13-08 07:06 PM

Looks like the release schedule is going to be one or two a month.

Giles 08-13-08 08:41 PM

I hope for two :D

PopcornTreeCt 08-13-08 08:57 PM

Damn, I was hoping there was an announcement. I'm crossing my fingers for Bottle Rocket and Chungking Express as the first 2. Then they can release their catalog titles I have no interest in.

tylergfoster 08-13-08 11:01 PM

So it's not all of those titles, and THEN one or two a month?

Gizmo 08-13-08 11:04 PM

Bottle Rocket will be one of the first release to tie-in with the DVD release...I hope.

pro-bassoonist 08-14-08 12:09 AM

Is there significant value for the average Criterion fan to having films made available in high-def?

Absolutely. There's a luminous quality to real film, and HD resolution captures that. I particularly love black-and-white [films] in HD. They're gorgeous, and that's one of the big secrets of Blu-ray: how good black-and-white movies look.

Yeah this was always the case. At least thats what I read in their initial announcement.

ali_b 08-14-08 05:08 PM

My guess would be that those titles which have already been released, or are planned for release, elsewhere in the world would be first, so I'm going to bet on 400 Blows and Chungking Express being their debuts.

Supermallet 08-14-08 05:15 PM

Just give me The Man Who Fell To Earth in HD. The rest can wait.

Go PS3!

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10016208-1.html

It goes without saying that the folks who work at Criterion Collection are film buffs. And anyone who has watched one of the company's lovingly remastered DVDs can attest to the fact the company really cares about making films look as good as they can. That's why we took notice when a poster at AVS Forum pointed out an interesting tidbit in Sound & Vision's recent profile of Criterion Collection's new high-def home theater--Criterion's reference Blu-ray player is a PS3.

We're not exactly surprised. We've been using the PS3 as our reference Blu-ray player at CNET since it was released, and you'll notice that it tops our best Blu-ray players list by quite a margin. Furthermore, it's worth noting that video quality expert Joe Kane help set up Criterion's new home theater room. When we checked out Joe Kane's demo of the truly awesome SP-A800B at CES, we specifically asked what Blu-ray player he thought had the best image quality, he immediately said the PS3. So if you're worried about the image quality of a "game console" versus a high-end standalone Blu-ray player, it's worth rechecking your assumptions when CNET, Criterion and Joe Kane all vouch for the PS3's excellent performance.

Another interesting piece of gear we noted from the S&V article is a DVI Gear HDMI cable. That's right, the image quality experts at Criterion opt for the relatively cheap DVI Gear brand rather than splurge on a $275 Monster cable. Again, that's no surprise to us, as we even recommended a $2 DVI Gear cable in our Quick Guide to HDMI cables. If the image quality experts at Criterion and CNET both agree that inexpensive cables generally perform just as well as more expensive cables, we're betting those cables are okay for your home theater too.
