i'll take any kurosawa but i especially would like to see high and low show up on bd. as for older criterion titles, we need bd's of insomnia, robinson crusoe on mars, for all mankind, and the killer or hard boiled.

This was mentioned in Criterion's original Blu-ray announcement, so it'll most likely be coming sometime this year.

My most desired Kurosawa films on BD would be these (this order):
1. Seven Samurai
2. Red Beard
3. Ran
4. Yojimbo + Sanjuro

As much as I would love to see Criterion put out the Killer or Hard Boiled on BD, they'd have to do some serious work to reacquire the rights first.

Ran on BD would be an instant buy for me. That would look fantastic!

Seriously. All of those medium and long shots are just crying out for a hi-def presentation, not to mention the striking use of color.

And Amazon now pushes 400 Blows "back" to March 26.

Looks like May 12 for RAN.

Is anybody not going to buy Ran?

I'm not sure if I really want to hear the answer.

I'm not! While I understand and respect how important Kurosawa was to film, the vast majority of his work just doesn't appeal to me.

Wonder if this is using the Japanese Blu-ray transfer or if Criterion did their own? It also lends some distinct possibility to a Rashomon Blu-ray in the [near?] future, since the just-released Japanese set has a new master of that one, too.

That. Worth a rental but not my type of films. Is Criterion still doing 2 BDs a month?

This kicks all kinds of ass! Ran is an EPIC masterpiece, one that just screams out for a Blu Ray release. And now it's getting it!

Now they just need to get working on the Seven Samurai BD...

That may have been their intention initially, but it's currently more sporadic. You might get two new ones one month, nothing in another, or maybe a new release and a reissue... Not as random as the Eclipse releases have been over the past year, but hardly a concrete schedule.

M only (small) gripe is that, in terms of new releases, the ones that end up on Blu-ray aren't usually the titles I'd personally like to see in high-def. But I'm hardly a slave to buying Blu, so it isn't like I'm bothered by a DVD-only release.

Gotcha. I don't follow Criterion since they don't seem to release films I'd like to own (both on DVD and Blu-ray) so I was curious of their schedule. So far just Bottle Rocket for me.

I have never used the banana before but this is reason enough! I am so excited to be getting some Kurosawa on Blu-ray. I hope they release more of his work this way soon as well. I know I might be in the minority but one of the releases I want the most is for The Bad Sleep Well.

The Bad Sleep Well - A GREAT movie. A Kurosawa FILM NOIR! (More or less...)

I'd love to have that one on Blu Ray.

Hell, there are probably a dozen Kurosawa films I'd like to have on Blu Ray (led by, as I've noted before, Seven Samurai).

Since Criterion no longer has the rights to The Killer or Hardboiled it's doubtful you'll see them anytime soon.

According to DVD Beaver, the Japanese BRs look pretty crappy. I'm pretty confident that Criterion will do their own transfer, and do a much better job of it as well. (doubtful they'll get around to "Quiet Duel' any time soon, though)

I think they'll do their own transfer as well. Considering about 90% of their releases in the last couple of years have been "remastered in High Definition" I would expect them to release many Blu-rays.

I'd love to have that one on Blu Ray.

With expanded extras - the Criterion disc only includes a featurette and the trailer. Repositioned subtitles would be a big plus too.

Excellent News! I will be getting this for sure. I haven't seen Ran yet, but that's only because I'm trying to work through Kurosawa films somewhat chronologically. Can't wait for some more of his works!

:brickwl2: I won't be any time soon... Got this a couple of years ago, but haven't had the time to even watch it yet (the wife isn't really into Japanese film)! Can't justify the upgrade right now if I already have it... Luckily I only have this, Ikiru and Seven Samurai on DVD, so any other Kurosawa and I think I could justify a Blu-Ray purchase (Please let the next release be Rashomon!)!

Oh man. I'm going to wait on reviews for this, but I may have to pay a full $27.99. I hate spending more than $15 for a Bluray.

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

it's kind of annoying practice of Criterion to NOT port all the extras found on the standard DVD edition.

- New, restored high-definition digital transfer (with uncompressed stereo soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
- Audio commentary featuring film scholar Stephen Prince
- An appreciation of the film by director Sidney Lumet
- A.K., a 74-minute film by director Chris Marker
- A 30-minute documentary on the making of Ran, from the Toho Masterworks series Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create
- A 35-minute video piece reconstructing Ran through Kurosawa’s paintings and sketches, created as part of the series Image: Kurosawa’s Continuity (NOTE: not included in the Blu-ray edition)
- Video interview with actor Tatsuya Nakadai
- Theatrical trailers
- New and improved English subtitle translation
- Plus: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Wilmington and interviews with Kurosawa and composer Toru Takemitsu (NOTE: Takemitsu interview not included in the Blu-ray edition)

:mad2:

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays

Criterion might just be to cheap to put the additional features on a BD25 if space is an issue. But hey, at least we get the awesome packaging.
