That looks like the standard DVD. The Blu-ray is still $27.95.

It just might be. That would explain that.

Probably because he was more interested in the movie than in the 3D effects?

I'm seeing $27.95. Are you sure you weren't looking at the SD 2-disc? That's $22.99.

What's this?

The image looks like it could be better. Yes, it's light years beyond the DVD. But it's not demo quality.

I'd wait to see it on your set before making a final opinion. It looks much better and at least it is anamorphic. And the sound appears to be fantastic but that I'll need to hear for myself as well.

The previous DVD looks pretty bad, very little sense of depth. The BR looks like it's going to be amazing, finally the way it should look at home.

And you're basing that opinion on a screengrab from DVDBeaver? Hardly a true barometer of how the video actually looks. HomeTheaterForum's review says the picture quality is astonishing and says the BD is reference quality.

Also, since when does every BD have to be reference quality? Nightmare Before Christmas is not the newest film in the world, and was shot on film, unlike Corpse Bride, which was shot digitally. I, for one, can't wait.

Yes. Hence, the quote.

I'm sure the PQ is probably great, the screengrabs didn't pop out at me like other Beaver shots have.

I have found that DVDBeaver's screengrabs have become more and more underwhelming, particularly when doing direct comparisons. Look at the comparison of The Adventures of Robin Hood. It hardly looks to be the vast improvement that it actually is. Their review of Batman (1966) looks to be no difference at all, yet the Blu-ray is an enormous step up over the previous DVD.

I'm relying less and less on DVDBeaver everyday.

You really can't go by the comparisons on the page, because they are of a low resolution, even lower than DVD. They worked for DVD, but they are not large enough for BD. What you CAN use is the full-sized screengrabs you get by clicking on some of the images. In this case they only offer one shot to compare, but it's enough.

Take a look at the old woman with the book. Click on both the DVD shot and the BD shot and compare them using tabs in your browser. I see a pretty big difference. Granted, they're using the old non-anamorphic disc which may not be fair, but if you're going to buy it now you might as well get the BD anyway.

Just gave this disc a spin last night and I must say it looked fantastic! Even better than the picture though was the the TrueHD soundtrack in 7.1! This is by far the best TNBC has looked or sounded.

Just got the BD via Amazon today. Looks great, saw a few songs. Great to see the Making Of too.

One thing that was sort of weird was that Disney sort of acted like a fair weather friend towards this movie. When it was originally released, they released it under their Touchstone label due to it being more scary, etc. And over the last few years, now that it's been successful, they plaster their production logos all over the theatrical re-release, and the current BD. But in the end, it's their property, and it's good they "accept" it now.

Watched some earlier today. Excellent picture, and the sound is fantastic. And you know what? I'm tickled pink to have the movie on my iPhone. It sits very comfortably next to Rambo and Hotel Chevalier. It's worth the extra $5 to me.

Hmm...I have an Ipod but I have to take David Lynch's position on movies on portable devices.

I manage a movie theater. I certainly value the theatrical experience, probably more than most. At the same time, how often can you see your favorite movies on the big screen? Granted, Nightmare gets a 3D release every year, but how often will Wall-E be re-released? Or Rambo? Yes, I would prefer to watch a movie on the big screen or in my home theater, but sometimes you're stuck at the DMV or just bored or want to show a specific scene to someone. It's nice to have a few of these movies handy. I'd rather fill up my iPhone with movies instead of music.

Well, my take is that once I have a movie in HD, that's the only way I want to see it from then on. If I'm going to watch something on the go, I'd at least watch one of the many movies not available in HD, or even something that was shot in SD like certain TV shows (they work better anyway for short sessions). There, it isn't such a step down in quality. If I was watching a DC that came with a BD, I would be asking myself why I'm not saving it for when I can see it in HD.

Besides, if I have to entertain myself on the go, I'd rather play a video game. You might think that's just like movies because the A/V experience isn't as good as it is on the HDTV at home. The difference is that the gameplay is what's most important, and that can pretty much be replicated (depending on the game) on a portable device. With a movie, it's all about the visuals and sound.

I have no problem with people liking having portable movies. They're just not for me. Showing a scene to someone is a neat use of the concept though.

I dunno, the screen on the iPod nano is pretty damn good. I actually enjoy watching movies on my nano a lot. I've seen There Will Be Blood on it more times than I care to confess
