Are they trying to make a point about capacity? Seems like you don't need both. I'd love to sell my somewhat rare Jack Ryan HD DVD set, but the pessimist in me says to wait until the BD's are actually in my hands. Hopefully they've done something to correct the transfer of Sum of All fears, which looked not so hot. |

You kind of do need both, though, since many people don't have systems which can play one (or both) of those. They have to sell to a bunch of consumers whose players may not decode lossless audio and/or bitstream it to a receiver which will. |

Going over the specs again, I see the DD+ track listed. I know some BD players can decode it, but I wonder why they're including that AND a standard 5.1 track?

But remember also how so many people here were complaining that Fox should be including a TrueHD and/or PCM track because there weren't -- at that point -- any players that could decode DTS-MA? To be sure, I think the inclusion of multiple lossless tracks is more of a "look what we can do" marketing gimmick. You must admit, though, that there is a level of convenience for the consumer -- whether or not it was intended by the studios -- when multiple formats of lossless sound are included on a given release. Some people have analog 5.1 (or 7.1) outs, some don't. Some have players that decode the advanced audio codecs (whether one or all), and some don't. Some have players that bitstream and some don't. Some have players that don't bitstream but can decode, yet have no analog 5.1 (or 7.1) outs. That said, the inclusion of multiple choices does actually help at least some of their consumers, who wouldn't otherwise be able to play back lossless audio if they'd only been given one choice. |
I hope the DD+ track, assuming it is 1.5Mbps, is left on, as that would an even easier way to compare it to the lossless tracks.
