Available on the internet from Sony? Or is this some kind of leaked firmware?

It's available on the PS3, just finished downloading and installing it now.

More details of the update available here

Expect them to be posted to the 'official' site soon.

Basically it adds DTS MA and a revamp of the online store.

Update works as advertised. I'll definitely be watching some Fox and Liongate stuff this week.

The update works like a charm......except for New Line titles. Right now there seems to be no rear center channel activity on their 7.1 audio tracks. Hopefully this gets corrected in a future firmware update.

Otherwise it's decoding DTS-HD MA with no problem.

Seems many people are seeing this at AVS.

Of course the first disc I tried was Shoot 'Em Up, and my 605 was only reporting 5.1 PCM. I know the PS3 is enabled for 7.1 PCM because I get that from several games.

For now I'll just keep using my BD30 for New Line discs. My PS3 is primarily for gaming anyway.

Updated...

The online store still sucks. Its a hell of a lot cleaner, but still no where near what the Xbox Live experience is. Oh well.

Is anyone else icons not loading? Ive tried going to the Blu-ray trailer store and it takes several minutes for a little thumbnail to show up. I can read the text, just no picture.

Actually I like the BD30 a lot. It does not have internal decoders for DTS-HD or TrueHD from what I've read in the manual, so I bitstream everything.

I haven't actually played any 7.1 tracks through it yet, but I will be trying that tonight in light of the PS3 issue just to double check. I've never read about any issues in the BD30 master thread at AVS though.

It's actually a pretty fast loader in my experience. Not as fast as the PS3, but there's only a few second difference on discs I've tried in both. I got it back in February when I couldn't wait any longer to hear DTS-HD MA on the 50+ discs I had with those kind of tracks.

My BDP-S1 is pretty much retired at this point, but it's still nice to have the PS3 and BD30 around for testing in case one has a problem the other doesn't have. Plus now I can decode internally from the PS3 vs. bitstream from the BD30 for comparison sake, should the need arise.

On the bluetooth thing, while it definitely makes the PS3 the "odd man out", IMO IR is old tech that needs to go away. Line of sight can be a pain in the ass with IR and my Harmony - I have to make sure the controller is pointing just so or I won't get everything to turn on at once, since the IR receiver on my display is 7 feet to the right of my component rack.

If all devices eventually use BT or some other non-line of sight protocol, that would be awesome.
I agree. It is the thing that I hate most about my Harmony.

Yes it does. There are separate red icons that show up, and when you hit Display it will read out TrueHD, DTS-HD MA or Dolby Digital +.

I have had the BD30 since it was first released in November '07 and love it. It is a solid machine. Load times are pretty fast and I think they improved some with the last update (1.6). I would rather have the player bitstream the audio and let the receiver do the decoding. I just bought a new tv, so it will be a while before I can upgrade to a HDMI 1.3 receiver. I am one of the few who likes Sony receivers, so I may wait for their 820 model to show up next month.

So all I need to do is set my PS3 audio out setting to PCM (rather than bitstreaming), and it will send TrueHD, Uncompressed PCM and DTS-HD to my receiver, right? I've always had it set to PCM, I just want to make sure I don't need to change anything to enjoy DTS-HD.

Yes. I think the only thing that changes when it's set to bitstream is that "standard" DD and DTS tracks will pass as a bitstream. This can be useful for passing the EX/ES flags, since the PS3 will discard them and decode such tracks to 5.1 PCM. However, if you're using DPLIIx, this won't matter much, and you may prefer DPLIIx anyway (since then the back surround "channels" will be stereo).

That only works thru HDMI though correct? If I output my audio via the toslink it has to be set to bitstream correct?

You probably should set the optical output setting for bitstream so you get discrete channels, since PCM over optical is limited to stereo. However, some people actually prefer that for lossless tracks, processed into a fake 5.1 using Pro Logic II. I would set it for bitstream though.

So are you suggesting that when I watch a standard DVD on my PS3 I should switch it back to Bitstream? I've never really thought of doing that before. Now that you mention it, the "DTS indicator" on my receiver doesn't light up when I play a standard DTS DVD on my PS3. The receiver continues to display "PCM 48 KHZ". I send audio from my PS3 to my receiver over HDMI.

you don't have to, it should be the same. But I wish the PS3 had an option "Bitstream when possible"

I downloaded it yesterday and threw in Predator which sounds and looks better than it ever has before. I also threw in Die Hard. They both sounded incredible. I am going to find a new film with this type of track to throw in. I haven't checked out the new store yet. The PS3 is basically my Blu-Ray player and nothing else. I play games on the 360. I will get Metal Gear Solid though.
