I better have one waiting for me when I get home.....
Are they giving one per customer, or one per player?

Well, at least once I actually get this e-mail.

Looks like one per player. The fine print at the bottom of the email includes this:
$50.00 promotional credit is per HD DVD player purchased prior to February 23, 2008--up to 10 units for a maximum credit of $500.00.

Well, unless someone has heard something I haven't, this is another nail in the coffin of perception against "small business" (at least in my eyes). I bought my HD-A1 not too long after launch from a "small business" (nowhere near the size of Amazon or Best Buy) because I wanted to support the "little guy". The little guy (afaik) has not received any promotion from the manufacturer, and most likely can't afford to give any compensation on his own.
Yes, any vendor or retailer giving anything at all in this case is pure customer service and 'above and beyond', and yes, early adopters run major risks; but human nature being as it is, I can't help being a little resentful.
Anyway, congrats to those of you who bought it from Amazon, especially after the major price drops.

I too purchased 3 players from a notable online store through AVS (A1/A2/A3) and it sucks I didn't get any compensation that every other retailer is giving out. Sucks but it will be the last time I order from a small website again. I lost out on $150.

Whoops, I posted in the other thread, but I just got mine for the add-on as well.

Wow. I love Amazon.
I just got the email too.
I actually made money buy purchasing the A2 now because of a credit they gave me due to a problem with the rebate form they had posted. I actually gained about $12 by purchasing the A2.
$138 total cost shipped
$100 credit for rebate form problem
$50 GC today
+$12

Amazon will continue to get my business. I buy almost everything from them now.

Wouldn't Toshiba almost have to be at least partially supporting these? With buybacks they can at least maybe try to resell them or depending on condition ship them back to Toshiba, but just flat out giving money away (even though most gift cards are never used, and the ones that are, usually get something else purchased as well) on a product they most likely already took a hit on could be somewhat expensive, especially when it's just a goodwill gesture. Or is this the first time since the surge of internet purchasing that a reasonably expensive product has both sold a decent number, and crashed and burned so quickly (how long did NGage last and how many did they sell, that's the nearest thing I can think of; and I don't recall how much it was.) Especially when, as has been said before, they don't have to, they still sold the units and dropped prices.
It would be interesting to know if Tosh is subsidizing this, or if it's totally on the retailer level.

I didn't get mine, emailed Amazon CSR, they said they added it to my account, no coupon needed. There is a promotion credit called "HD DVD Promotion" when I go to check out.

Oooh, this is even better than the government rebate! Wait, um... well, it's still pretty cool and a total surprise to me. I bought my player last August and still got the $50. Watch it have a three minute expiration date.

This softens the blow a little bit. My A3 I bought with $125 in credits I got when I bought some stuff for my apartment for work so it was free money. I also ended up with 12 free discs. My A35 I paid the big bucks and still haven't gotten my 5 free. So at least the $50 will help on that

Maybe by the time I get mine (I bought my A1 from them two summers ago) I will have figured out what in the hell to buy. For some reason, I can only find stuff to buy when I *don't* have the money.
