don't kid yourself into thinking a better transfer will ever be made for Last Starfighter. I'm shocked they released it for HDDVD at all to be honest

Are they online anywhere for everyone to use? If so, where?

Watched this movie last night. I thought it sucked royally. The transfer was horrible, but nothing could save that lousy movie anyway.

Not to dogpile on TLS, but when it was new I thought it was a pretty bad movie. I'm a SciFi buff, but the story telegraphed it's deus ex machina ending right from the start, and even if you forgive the dated special effects and bad hair on Robert Preston, I still found it thorougly unentertaining.

YMMV, of course, but I'll only pick this up if it's dirt cheap and if I'm convinced my 7 y/o will enjoy it.

If you never bought from half.com I can send you a coupon (just pm me your name and email.) Also, you can always refer someone and when they use it, you get one. Just google Half.com Take Five

The Last Starfighter has been my favorite "B" movie since I originally saw it in the theater (as an adult, BTW). For all its goofiness, I still enjoy it. But I would agree that it definitely isn't good for a blind buy, especially for those who are younger and used to more modern sci-fi.

People have different tastes. I frequently see people getting excited about titles that I wouldn't watch if you paid me. And some of my favorites are so much maligned here at DVD Talk that I never, ever, mention them. For the handful of us who actually liked TLS, it was nice to see it released on HD DVD. Others can just ignore it.

That's what I had to do. I even went onto their kiosk on the sales floor and showed them the online price for a couple of Universal HD-DVDs and the sales clerk I was talking to said they would not match it.

Went back the next day, with printouts, went straight to the checkout and they price-matched (Apollo 13 & Elizabeth @ 10.49) w/o a problem.

A little PO'd I had to go a second time, but it was only 5 mins from work.

to all of that.

A lot of the titles people I see snapping up fall into that "meh, typical movie" category that I'm really barely interested in even seeing for free, and probably wouldn't pay $5 for, if that. But I try not to pick on other peoples' movie tastes as that doesn't really do anything constructive

ezyDVD out of Total Recall

ezyDVD emailed me today to inform me that Total Recall has been discontinued and removed from my order. Anyone know someplace else I can get it cheap? Thanks!

I picked up Batman Begins at Target for $14 this afternoon.

300 was also on sale for $19. Not that great, but still a decline for Warner titles.

I obviously don't understand the conversion rates (or something else). 9.99 Euro equals $15 plus 4 Euro shipping per item?

I just got the American version and the video is underwhelming. It doesn't have the pop that the BBC version has(friend has it on Blu Ray). I'd say it's a bit better than SD but disappointing since it looked so good with the other version.

Animals looks somewhat blurry when they're moving but when it's just landscapes it looks above average.

With at least half of player owners receiving this title for free, it should be about $9.00

Just an update on this for those a little confused by VAT and currency conversion - For Americans the VAT (a tax) is removed and these titles are 8,26 Euros and then shipping for my possible order I have not yet placed was 4,96 for the 4 items. That is 38,00 Euros which is a shade under $60. So about $15 each if you order 4 titles. Hope that helps a little. I have not done a lot of transactions in Euros or other currency in a while so if I made a mistake, feel free to correct me those in the know.

FYI -- Your credit card company may ding you a fee or use a less favorable exchange rate than xe.com reports. It may be $65-70 when you are done.

There is an option to select 6 Euros max for shipping up to 10 items. But still, I would think it would be much more than $16. More like $40 or something.

Also, these are PAL HD DVDs, so what are you guys using to play these? A hacked Toshiba HD DVD player?

There is no such thing as NTSC/PAL in HD-DVD.

Huh, my transactions in the past have always been around XE if not better. If it has a VISA logo I doubt you would get hit with a conversion fee - I never have on any of my different Debit or Credit accounts - although that is a good word of warning - the dollar has been very weak lately and a quick change in value is possible.

Well, HOLY SCHMOLY. I just learned something. I was getting my panties in a wad. And all for nothing. So, why do they say "PAL" on the specs. Improperly categorized format? So with HD we don't have to worry about the PAL/NTSC issue. Amazing I've never come across this, but come to think of it, I've never ordered overseas before. Well, this is good.

Supposedly through HDMI, PAL/NTSC isn't an issue at all, at least on my friend's LCD TV. Strangely my Toshiba A3 refuses to play PAL DVDs though.

That's not strange at all. Most DVD players in the American market are NTSC (and an HD DVD player is also a DVD player).
