Sony Announces "Final Spec" Profile 2.0 Blu-ray Players

The BDP-S350 player Sony plans to introduce this summer for "about $400" will be the company's first to feature an Ethernet port, allowing it to connect to a home broadband connection. However, it won't be able to access Internet content when it ships — a software upgrade will be available later to enable that feature, known as BD-Live.
Well will the profile be ready for the PS3 is the big question!

This is the description from Blu-Ray.com. And, no, the PS3 currently does not have all that.

Sony Electronics has announced two new players to their Blu-ray line, the BDP-S350 and the BDP-S550. When released, both will not only be BonusView (Profile v1.1) players, but will also be BD-Live (Profile v2.0) ready, meaning they can be updated via firmware to full BD-Live compatibility. The BDP-S350 will ship sometime in the Summer for $400, followed in the Fall by the BDP-S550 for $500.
The BDP-S350 will offer 1080p24/60 output via HDMI, an Ethernet port, and decoding of 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. The player will also be capable of bit streaming Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio to a capable receiver. Additionally, it will support for the expanded xvYCC color space during playback of AVCHD discs, and compatibility with most BD, DVD, and CD media.
In addition to having all the features of the S350, the BDP-S550 will feature 1GB of persistent storage. Additionally, it will decode DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio and feature 7.1 analog outs.
Both players will feature a slim design to match upcoming Sony Home Theater in a Box (HTIB) products.

You're additional information is JUST THAT, additional. Certainly it more refined and informative than the initial press release to which I was responding. I was trying to point out how lame that press release was in not really informing the reader about anything earthshattering for Profile 2.0. No need to get all snooty-snotty...jeez.

meaning exactly...?
If I'm using HDMI for audio, and the player decodes the DTS-MA, how does the lack of bitstream capability affect me?
Not trying to be facetious , I really am interested.

I'll probably join the blue camp and pick up a BDP-S550 when it comes out. Does anyone know if Sony has officially said that there will be no more "versions" of Blu Ray? It's one of the things that has kept me out of the Blu Ray camp so far. Well, that and price.

The $50 price cut and fact that it's a final spec standalone will give a clear alternative to the PS3. I see this as one more thing that will cause a bunch more people to adopt Blu-ray. And that can't be a bad thing for those of us who have already invested in BD and keep having to listen to people say it will lose to digital downloads and/or people will never need more than upscaled DVDs.

Well, Profile 1.1 is the FINAL profile for blu-ray. All blu-ray players from now on must be, at the least, 1.1, which has PiP support. Profile 2.0 is 100% OPTIONAL but will likely become the set standard. There is only 1 other profile, 3.0, but it is a AUDIO ONLY profile and not meant for movies. No other profiles exist. Hope that helps.

These new units will match the new Sony receivers quite nicely. I posted info on those in the Home Theater forum. 2 of the models will feature 4 HDMI inputs + advanced audio decoding of all the formats. The STR-DG920 is $600, available in June, the STR-DG820 is $400, available in May.
By year's end, I hope to have revamped my home theater setup with the BDP-S350, the STR-DG820, and a nice 46" Sony LCD.

BDP-S550 is going on my list for Blu-ray players to buy in early 2009. Those are the kind of specs I was waiting for.
