oppo to make BR player

i think everyone knows oppo's reputation in the upscaling dvd market, now it looks like they'll be trying their hand with BR as well...

Wonder if it will also upscale DVDs well?
I'm not sure if any BR can upscale as well as HD-DVD players, but I'd love to get one. Might have to wait for this one...especially since it should have more bang for the buck than other BR players.

I'm interested. I have been pleased with my Oppo 970.

And possibly a BR region-free version that we're able to import? Even if it's not advertised, OPPO would be a most likely candidate to hack I would guess. Since the majority of my collection is region-free imported DVDs I'd like to have all my players able to play them. Not just the HD-DVD players.

If they make one that is also region free and plays both NTSC and PAL DVDs, I'm very interested.

Holy shit! This is huge as Oppo has made the best dvd player I've ever had. If Oppo makes this a Profile 2.0 player, this will be a day one purchase for me.

I'll buy it if it is reasonably priced.

Yeah, profile 2.0, region free, bitstream audio, and DVD-Audio playback (which they usually do) would make this the player to beat

There have been quite a few hints in the Oppo 983 thread at AVS for quite some time now that they will be producing a BR player. It might take awhile for them to reach the status of their SDVD machines though...with a region-free BR player.

If they could be priced the same as the PS3 they will have a winner.

im in 2, but i have a feeling its going to be pricey. the 983 is somewhere in the 300s, so I can only imagine a BR would be 500 or so. eek

I'm in if it's region free for BR and DVD, and converts PAL->NTSC. Also would help if it plays DVD Audio and SACD as the latest Oppo does.

Sign me up, too. Could be the final straw towards getting me on board with BD.

Region free is the dealbreaker here (I know most discs are region-free already, but that can change). I love my imports too much.

This is probably a stupid question because I don't know everything about how it works, but could a "hackable" player cause issues with BD+? If BD+ "checks around" the player to see if everything is legitimate, could there be a problem if the player is hacked to be made region-free? Or will that be kept separated enough that BD+ won't see it?

The most robust solution is to have a dual-firmware machine, that boots from firmware A or B on user selection. Then, no matter what BD+ checks are in place, it only sees a perfectly legitimate one-region firmware and machine.
