Well, this explain things at my local WalMart. They had HD-DVD and Blu-Rays before Christmas. Shortly afterwards, they all disappeared. I looked the other day, and Blu-Rays had shown back up.
Too bad it was mostly the Harry Potter movies.

We may not have always agreed about how the war should have turned out, but we definitely agree about Bill Hunt.

Go to Sam's Club people. Both Wal-Marts near me have shit for HD selections. The Sam's I work at has a ton of Blu. Almost all of the new releases, plus pallet displays for Lionsgate and Warner(actually at least three pallets) catalog titles.

As far as the Chicago land area is concerned stores do not carry HD media even as of today and he has a point).

My original post was very clear that I disagreed with the claim that this was non-news, based on anecdotal evidence from a few Walmart locations. That is completely different than "dismissing your comments as lies".

John Henson: McDonald's has dumped Kobe Bryant as their spokesperson and have replaced him with Yao Ming. Apparently McDonald's prefers Yao because he is a bigger international star, and he doesn't rape so much.

However, early next year, I do plan on going Blu-ray. Given we have BOGO sales.

And I have to agree, Wal-Mart doesn't have that great of a collection of HD titles around my location, either. Maybe this will change.

I went to both Wal-Mart and Fry's Electronics today and both are PROMINENTLY displaying Blu-ray players and discs. Let's face it folks: it's pretty much over for HD-DVD.
This will be even more true when the lower-cost Profile 1.1 and 2.0 players using recently-unveiled lower-cost player chipsets start hitting the market this summer and fall, which could drive the cost of a Blu-ray player under US$200 for a Profile 1.1 player and US$250 for a Profile 2.0 player. These prices are the "tipping point" where sales of Blu-Ray players really take off.

...and you know one format has won when Ray continually italicizes it.

Wait a minute. Maybe we should protest Walmarts decision. Afterall, it is because of Walmart that I have an HD-DVD player. It was their $99 pre-black friday sale that seduced me into red. And now that I'm hooked, now barely 3 months later they say sorry, but we're not going to stock HD-DVDs anymore? That ain't right.

I wonder if Toshiba gave Wal-Mart the green light for this announcement. Reason is, Wal-Mart would be shipping back the HD DVD players to Toshiba if the players were in the return period.

In the grand scheme of overall things, yes, it's obvious it is a big announcement. But, don't discount someone's take on it, just because it is different than your own.
However, I will still contend that you don't know whether it will "have an impact on your life". At least, not yet. What if, as a result of the decision, Walmart opts to put a lot more Blu-ray product in a lot more stores?
I've been mulling over the Walmart situation, and it seems that they must have been using a subset of their stores as sort of a test market for HDM, to be able to gauge consumer interest and preference without investing too deeply in either format at the start. And now that the have decided which format will sell better for them, why wouldn't they broaden their coverage of it to more areas, perhaps including yours?

Walmart tells Toshiba what's what. Just like they do with every vendor.
What's Toshiba going to do - say "we're not giving you our products ever again to sell?" I doubt Walmart would even notice.
This isn't meant to be snarky or anything.
This is simply how Walmart is in the retail landscape - they say jump, everyone does.

Then why didn't Wal-Mart announce their plans back in January? Why would they wait a month and a half? Was Wal-Mart concerned about returned merchandise? I agree, Wal-Mart certainly doesn't live off of selling High-Def equipment--and never will, but why would they wait so long after Warner Brothers' announcement. If it wasn't about consumers returning product, then what other reasons would Wal-Mart have.
