What is the average you've paid per HDM title?
I've paid an average of $16.20 per HDM title, and that includes the absorbed cost of 2 XBOX 360 add-ons, 2 HD-DVD players, as well as Heroes S1, Prison Break S1, Lost S3, Ultimate Matrix, Planet Earth, Spider-man 1-3, Ocean's 11, 1-3, and Mission Impossible 1-3 counted as one $16.20 title each.

I'm a newbie to Blu-ray, but I'm VERY happy to say the average is $10.76
And people call this an expensive hobby.
In all seriousness, this number is helped by the 5 free title rebate as well as the free Spider-man 3 disc. Not to mention Superbad and Flags of Our Fathers being counted as free because I just got them for my birthday.
However, I did pay for the other 15 Blu-rays I own, which include Close Encounters and Blade Runner. I took advantage of Amazon sales, Best Buy's $20 off 3 BD coupon, and a few used purchases from DVD Talkers.

I've kept a detailed spreadsheet on this. It includes freebies, BOGO's, box sets, etc:
$13.57
$13.57

I'm at about $14 even for 19 BD's and 15 HD DVD's (including 5 free). This includes the monetary value of discs given to me as Christmas presents (BOURNE ULT. & POTTER 1-5) and the actual retail price for discs I bought with reward zone certificates (TRANSFORMERS, BOURNE ID., & HOT FUZZ).
If I only went by the amount of money out of my pockets it would be $8.56 per title.
Factoring in PS3 and A2 and I'm up to $28 per title (out of my pockets)...which is still reasonable.

How are people accounting for freebie promo titles?
Since I got in on the Toy R Us sales in combination with the $5 Disney coupon I'm running just over $12 so far (not counting the freebies I haven't even received yet).

Freebie promo titles should indeed be factored in as $0 just like any other title -- since, believe it or not, there are some people who have had to pay for The Prestige, Superman the Movie, The Patriot, etc. and it's a deal just like a B1G1 ... except it's completely free.

$16.72 counting sets as one. $11.63 counting sets per title/disc. (For example: counting The Matrix set as three.)
But my actual cost is much lower because I have also sold 55 HD titles at a profit to defray the cost of the ones I keep. Subtracting out the net gain from the discs sold I get:
$8.69 counting sets as one. $6.04 counting sets per title/disc. Since I have another half dozen titles in my "for sale" inventory, my average cost numbers will drop a bit more when I get them sold.
For the record, I got NO free promotional titles from the purchase of my player. Those deals came later.
[Edited to reflect an Amazon refund just received.]

162 hd dvds for a average of $12.69 each. That includes 5 (Matrix, Mission Impossible, That's Entertainment, & two Heroes Season 1) box sets. If you add the 10 freebies (172 hd dvds) the average drops to $11.95.

All the free discs, 10% Amazon discounts and various B1G1, B2G1 and GameStop cheap used deals still have me around $10 a movie for my average and that is for 126 titles. I have also been in the game since day one, but really lowered my average disc cost in 2007. The cost is much higher now and that has pretty much killed my HD disc buying unless I run across a good deal on used at GameStop. Bonnie and Clyde is the only movie I currently have preordered.

I once had somebody come into my house, see my collection of 2000+ discs, and wonder how I could afford so many and everything else in the house. I later found out he thought I was paying full price he like he does. He was floored when I told him I got the majority of them for under $10.
