Re: General HD DVD news and discussion PART 3

I just read the review at HDD. He mentions turning the db level up by 20. That sounds about right. I had no idea there were any issues with TrueHD on any of their old discs. The DD+ sounds good though. It'll have to do until WB gets around to re-releasing the BD, which will probably not be anytime soon.

Okay, I was watching Chuck and Larry the other night. And again, the TrueHD track was much quieter than the DD+ track. I had to turn the TrueHD volume up considerably. Is this the case for every single HD DVD title with lossless audio?

Ive never had that problem before. What firmware is your A1 rocking? 4.0 is the latest (and likely last).

4.0

The DD+ audio blasts through the speakers at my normal level. But once I switch to TrueHD, it sounds like I turned the volume down dramatically. Maybe something in the settings needs to be changed. It's not the worst thing since most audio tracks are DD+.

I did manage to get the Complete Matrix set brand new for $36 shipped via ebay. And I just ordered Anchorman and Liar Liar from traderbora. I'm (back) up to 21 titles. Must....slow....down....

If I can't get TrueHD to sound the way it should, I still have a backup A3 to test.

I have no idea why that is. I assume you are connected via HDMI?

MrC,

You're not setup for bitstream right?

Just wanted to check - I could see that causing an issue on the A1 as it didn't have the 1.3 chip.

So if you're using HDMI and letting the A1 decode, I can't see why there would be that big a difference.

I still have my A1 in storage but I can hook it up and give it go to see if I get the same results - I still have Training on HD DVD. Not sure if I'd have any other HD DVD's to test though with TrueHD - the bulk of my remaining HD DVD's are Uni titles not yet released on BD, most of which do not have TrueHD.

It might be set to bitstream. I'm connected via HDMI to my Sony receiver. If the bitstream option is the reason, I wonder why it wouldn't cause the DD+ audio to also be lower?

The issue with Training Day seems to be the disc itself. The issue I had with it is also mentioned in HD Digest's review.

If you're set to bitstream, it might have something to do with how the player downconverts TrueHD.

I'll check the settings later today and see what happens. What should the audio settings be?

Check out the manual here:

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpasse...hd-a1_om_e.pdf

From the corrections page at the beginning, it looks like DD+ over HDMI at a bitstream setting can be sent undecoded, so if your receiver can decode DD+ you get the full benefit of DD+. With TrueHD over HDMI set to bitstream, you just get 2-channel PCM.

EDIT: Just re-read it again - it seems like the corrections page indicates 5.1 PCM for TrueHD is possible now over HDM if you set it to PCM instead of bitstream. I supposed you could try the auto setting to but typically I like my settings to be specific.
