Please recap the past 6 months in the HD world - Jan '08 edition

I haven't been keeping up lately and I couldn't possibly sort this out from all the threads, so please fill me in.

Is the format war over? Any changes in exclusivity? Any breakthrough sales numbers? Any fantastic news on either front? Amazing promotions that took place? Was this a period of "wow!" or a period of "well...." ?

It seems like we were always anticipating change, and things change so rapidly in today's world of technology. So how 'bout it... July-Dec '07, what's your summary?

A bunch of people made a bunch of speculations.

Then, some other bunch of people made a bunch more speculations.

Both sides got mad at the other side because they bought movies in the wrong color of packaging.

Then, Warner Brothers did something that they thought would help their business. This made a whole bunch of people happy and a whole bunch of people mad. Then both sides got mad at each other again.

While this was going on, the mods at this site got a whole bunch of headaches trying to stop a whole bunch of people from arguing over which color of case was better.

Apparently, the war is over, which is good, because all the casualties we've sustained in the past few months has really taken its toll on our country.

Now, finally, we begin to heal.

Also, I believe something may have been happening with people who write for television shows and movies, but all of my free time has been devoted to following this terrible, terrible war at home.

My vote would be a parody thread....check any long thread in this forum or any CES announcements....you'll find the latest.

There were some "retirement" threads here on HD Talk and those people came back after Blu-ray "won".

And there were a lot of personal attacks thrown around and it seems that hasn't escaped this thread as well.

I believe Josh missed a few before either format even launched.

I'm still wearing my red panties.

Of course, they are a little shit-stained after WB's announcement at CES.

Wasn't intended to be a parody thread... although I guess the responses aren't unexpected.

Still even the joking posts pretty much give you the run down. Do you need more than that?

I guess it all depends on your perspective. The way I see it, the events of the last six months are making HD DVD look more like Monty Python's Black Knight:

Large corporations form opec like cartels to control the fate of the next generation of media. Of course with greed as the primary motivator, the two formats are incompatible. Alot of money changes hands, content providers switch sides, hardware makers struggle to keep pace.

Finally one of the large corporations changes their mind and decides to back one format exclusively. Some others follow suit but the rival cartel vows to fight on. Those already commited to the stuggling side are angry, those committed to the up and coming side are happy while the rest of us simply have lost interest.

The bottomline is that if you "haven't been keeping up lately", you haven't missed a thing.

Or the guy infected with the plague...

CART MASTER:
'Ere. He says he's not dead!
CUSTOMER:
Yes, he is.
DEAD PERSON:
I'm not!
CART MASTER:
He isn't?
CUSTOMER:
Well, he will be soon. He's very ill.
DEAD PERSON:
I'm getting better!
CUSTOMER:
No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.
CART MASTER:
Oh, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
DEAD PERSON:
I don't want to go on the cart!
CUSTOMER:
Oh, don't be such a baby.
CART MASTER:
I can't take him.
DEAD PERSON:
I feel fine!
CUSTOMER:
Well, do us a favour.
CART MASTER:
I can't.
CUSTOMER:
Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.
CART MASTER:
No, I've got to go to the Robinsons'. They've lost nine today.
CUSTOMER:
Well, when's your next round?
CART MASTER:
Thursday.
DEAD PERSON:
I think I'll go for a walk.
CUSTOMER:
You're not fooling anyone, you know. Look. Isn't there something you can do?
DEAD PERSON: [singing]
I feel happy. I feel happy.

[whop]

CUSTOMER:
Ah, thanks very much.
