If anything isn't HD-dvd secret weapon Porn, I thought the porn industry was releasing movies in hd-dvd only because Blu Ray wouldn't allow it.

That's no longer the case.

I truly think the secret weapon is software availability from the studios. Regardless of the industry, the average consumer only cares about how many 'potential' movies they can purchase and on which player these movies can be played.

So, as for sports or porn...neither will be the secret weapon, IMHO.

You guys trashing on wrestling, do you ever venture into the main DVDTalk forum? It's the fastest growing thread I have seen and consistently on the first page as well (not even the Evil Dead thread keeps up). As for wrestling fans not being tech savvy, well, the videogame revolution should tell you something. Look at how well wrestling games sell, and the fact they are on 360s and PS3s, which basically demand an HDTV.

On the whole thing of wrestling not being a sport, well, it isn't. Though tell that to a few states who have tried labeling it as such to force sporting event taxes on the shows.

I wonder if the fact that The Marine (John Cena) and The Condemned (Steve Austin) both being Blu Ray releases will mean anything for which format they go to.

In both cases I think you have to look at the demographics. I don't read the wrestling thread so I don't know... but if you were to look at the average wrestling fan, my guess is they're male and mid-20's or younger. Probably about the same as your average DVDTalker. So it makes sense that that thread is popular. Same with the wrestling videogames.

I thought the off-topic stuff was supposed to cease... or was that only for people on the other side.

Thanks.

Yes, that thread keeps going, but so do the many, many, releases to talk about almost every week. And IMO, the average post in that thread backs up exactly the point I was making.

You're close, males 12-34 (I believe, going from memory here of the last ratings I have read) make up the target audience of WWE fans (and to be honest, it looks like they are going for a more 18-34 audience in the latter years).

And going by what you just wrote, it would also make sense that WWE HD, whatever format they go with, will be a somewhat big deal. I couldn't imagine a more target audience to try and sell HD to than 18-34.

What is off topic about it? If WWE decides to go HD-DVD, with their endless releases and damn good sales record, I can see it helping HD float the boat a little while longer. I was merely stating how many of you are underestimating the potential impact WWE could make on the HD market, regardless of which format they go to. Their SD sales are great, and given the videogame market tie in with HD, they could also help give a push in the real battle (HD over SD).

Honestly, I see them going BR because of their last two in-house movie releases being released on the format, but the idea that Toshiba is courting WWE and sports in general is pretty interesting.

For the purposes of this thread, wrestling is included even though some would like to debate the "sport" aspect. So, please just don't bring it back up.
