American Gangster HD-DVD (2/19)

It is awesome that this is coming out. I am a bit disappointed that the HD-Dvd side, yes it is a combo, will only have the theatrical version while the dvd side will have the extended version. Why did they do this?

wow.. that sucks for the HD-DVD side... I really want to see this, but since the WB announcement, I said I wont buy any more HD-DVDs, this one would have tempted me big time, but now that I read that, I certainly wont buy it.

The HD-DVD has both cuts on it.

Yes, both cuts are mastered in high-definition widescreen, but the HD side has the theatrical cut and the SD side has the extended cut. I've read this confirmed on a few different sites. There is no seamless branching on the HD side for the theatrical cut.

So, again, fuck combos. 2-disc SD for me.

I don't know where you're getting this info from as DVDActive states :
Also available from the 19th February will be a HD-DVD/DVD Combo release of the film. Both theatrical and unrated cuts will be presented in high definition widescreen, along with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track

Well, assuming both cuts are in HD they are still not including all the bonus material from the SD-DVD release, which is a shame.

From HiDef Digest:

Although the concurrently-released standard DVD versions will include a 174-minute extended cut of the film, the HD DVD side of the combo version will include only the original 157-minute theatrical cut. (Curiously, the DVD flipside of the disc will contain the extended cut.)

If this turns out to be true then it is a damn shame. Also, why couldn't they put a second disc in the set, to cover all of the SD 3-disc set's features, and charge an extra five bucks? The first disc should be non-combo with a branched version of both theatrical/extended versions of the movie. And the second disc should have all of the special features. Is this too much to ask?

That doesn't make sense... haven't all Extended/Director Cuts from Universal so far been the HD side, and the theatrical the SD-DVD side? That's still not the best scenario (having both in HD) but it's been working ok so far.

Who do they pay to make these boneheaded decisions?

I know that the "Unrated" version of Knocked Up is on the HD side of its combo disc, and while the SD side claims on the packaging to be the theatrical version, it is unfortunately also the unrated cut....
(I say unfortunately because I personally think it would have been nice to have the theatrical cut as well, even if in just SD....)

bonehead idea to fill out the SD and not the HD but, at least it's available on the disc as is and won't require a double dip. I'm in for this HD on day & date.

Already decided to get the 2-disc SD version. Even if I decided to keep buying HD-DVDs, the fact that it's a combo disc makes it easier not to get it...

I'll have to check out the finished product, seems to be too many conflicts in reports.

Miami Vice had the DC in HD, and the TC in SD. I agree that there's a lot of confusion on this one. We'll have to see what's actually on the disc when it comes out.

Confirmed:

HD DVD side is Theatrical. DVD side is Unrated. Also, someone posted pics comparing the DVD and HD DVD, and the difference was minuscule at best.

I was going to rent this, but now I won't bother.

I thought the TC was tepid at best - mostly boring and "been there, seen that" in terms of the cop vs. crime lord thing.

I was curious to see what the DC might have changed for the better, but I think I'll just pass if it's not in HD.

well, "miniscule" is a subjective opinion. if you're talking about the pics at AVS, the difference was quite obvious and not miniscule at all, in my opinion, as is almost always the case between DVD and hi-def.

Just got this one and will watch it tomorrow. I have to say that I'm fairly bummed about not having the extended cut on the HD side though...
