After the 5 free Blu-Ray promotion ends 1/31/08

will there be something else? Anything leak out yet? I am going to go blu (been waiting on a clear sign on a winner) not sure if I should wait or jump in now while I get 5 free movies.

IMHO the movies to pick from I certainly wouldn't buy myself. Very poor selection. I'm just getting a PS3 now because I can get triple BB points...

Doubt the selection will improve if they offer it again considering that WB jumping to Blu-Ray only seems to be the second to last nail in HD-DVD's coffin.

this is all just a matter of taste really, but i think the current selection is decent. there are more titles that i would actually want to own than in the HD DVD offer, at least. if you're planning to buy a blu-ray player anyway, you might as well get one before the offer ends.

Buy it now, enjoy it, but don't submit the rebate right away. That way, if a better offer comes up on February 1st, you haven't already cut out the UPC, and you can return/rebuy if needed.

good idea. Maybe I should wait until closer so I can return within the 15 day window most places give ya.

I still have to mail mine in. I bought my PS3 in late October. Frankly, none of the movies I didn't have on the list have motivated me to send it in.

Ditto, except I bought mine in November. However, I do think there were a couple on the list I did want (The Prestige and Swordfish, I know for sure). I'm horribly lazy though and have plenty of movies thanks to the various deals. I guess I better get on it so it doesn't expire!

Does anyone know if the deadline will be extended yet again? Or if a new deal will pop up? I'm getting a ps3 for my birthday in march and it sure would be nice to have 5 BD's to go with it!

Is this from one of those reward zone coupons they send in the mail? I'm looking to get a PS3 this weekend and 800 extra points would be a really nice bonus.

I forget, what is the RZ "discount"? Does it pretty much work out to 2%? So triple would be 6%?

Also, I wonder if BB still has 60 gig PS3s in stock.

I sent mine in. I figured even if they do a different promo, they are likely movies I would never buy anyway. Hopefully if they do another promo, that holds true.

Sadly, the discount on BB Reward Zone used to be $5 back for every $100 spent. Now it's $5 back with every $250. Very lame.

what's even more sad is, i've gotten 2 RZ coupons in the mail.

and last one had (2) $20 vouchers in there.

and this was before i bought a new ps3, with the triple points.

At least something back is better than nothing. I've bought thousands of dollars in groceries and other stuff from Wal-Mart in the past year and they have yet to send me anything. But I did like the 5 dollar certificate for every 100 dollars spent a little more.

What movies are included in the promotion? I'm going to be picking up a PS3 by the end of the month.

This has really gotten me thinking now -- I was going to buy my first player this week or next, and I didn't realize the promotion ended on January 31st. A couple of the titles in the rebate were ones I would want to own (Superman: The Movie, POTC, The Last Waltz), but I wonder if there will be another deal with better discs to choose from...

I remembered reading somewhere that the free BR special was only extended due to Toshiba extending their back at the first of October.

With HD-DVD on the ropes, is it likely that Sony will dump this promtion completely...especially if Toshiba dumps theirs?

It will go on again....almost guaranteed. 5 free is a big selling point for retail stores.

I dunno - Sony doesn't really have to compete anymore, so there is little incentive to keep giving their content away.

I wouldn't be surprised if the promotion ended. Eventually, you just have to trust that people are going to buy the player and a bunch of discs.

Last I checked HD DVD has not raised the white flag and Universal and Paramount are still exclusive. They will not only have to compete with HD DVD, but with DVD which they are trying to replace. Why spend $300 on a Blu-ray player when you could buy a upconverting DVD player for $50?

So we went from promoting High Definition to betting on upconversion. Very telling times indeed!

Perhaps upvonversion just isn't good enough?

Reel it back in, Pro-B. Gizmo was not advocating purchasing an upconverting DVD player, but rather giving a reason why the Blu-ray promotion would continue, as Blu-ray still has to compete against low-priced upconverting players. The only way you could construe his post as recommending upconversion over Blu-ray is by taking one sentence out of context, exactly as you just did. Don't keep doing it.

Could it be because there is a notable difference between seeing a film on Blu-Ray as seeing it upconverted?

Pro-B
Of course there is a difference... just that a lot of people will not or can not see it. For any of a variety of reasons.
