Go to Blu-ray.com or AVS and ask an "insider". They might know, or will at least a few hours before everyone else.

Any news?

jpb07 02-04-08 11:17 AM

Hypothetically, since they just require a COPY of the receipt, couldn't comeone easily photoshop a Wal-Mart receipt replacing the "2" with a "1" so it still would fall within the guideline?

chanster 02-04-08 11:33 AM

Why not just steal the Blu Rays out of the cabinet while you are at it.

Might have to wait a little longer. I think the promo was extended to 2/28 now. But I agree, the disc selection isn't that great for my preferences. I'm going to wait a bit longer.

I know the HD promo was extended, but not the BD promo. Are you sure?

Negative on the BD. It ended on January 31 and it has to be postmarked by February 29.

Which wouldn't make sense since the end of the month is actually 2/29. I would say the promo is over.

Blu-ray no longer sees HD DVD a threat apparently as the Get 5 free has ended. It also must not see DVD has a threat either. 5 free was a GREAT incentive to get someone to spend $300+ more on a Blu-ray player vs. $79 on an up-converting DVD player. Looks like they no longer care.

Pure speculation on your part, my friend.

True, I doubt the BDA would come outright on anything I just posted.

However, ending the 5 Free is a big blow to many that saw it as a great way to get into a format. It was a great advertising feature at Best Buy, CC, etc. and now, its that $399 player with nothing and that $149 player with 5 free by mail and 2 free in the box. To a consumer, which looks like a better deal? Do you think they know about studio support? Do you think they care if they only have to pay an extra $50-100 for an up-converting DVD player that can play HD DVDs and give you 7 free?

I have no doubt you will see a down shit in sales of Blu-ray players in the coming weeks (if they even provide that data. It only seems to show up with Blu-ray is winning  )

I hope the BDA starts this up again with a better selection of movies. I was fairly close to picking up another PS3, but now I'll pass.

Easy now. They could announce a new deal in the next few weeks. No need to spread FUD. I will be the first to credit your foresight if they do not re-up the deal within a month.

I imagine they will if sales are low.

 That's one way to put it!

It is possible. I will say that the absence of the offer does make a BD purchase less attractive. I hope it comes back.

Maybe they are testing to see if taking away the promotion will impact sales (which it will).

I do think that it would give a psychological edge to HD DVD when people see "player AND seven free movies for 1/2 the cost of this other player?"

That was really a typo, I promise. I thought at first you edited my quote

The form was marked 1/31/08 since last fall.

So now if they don't renew, they don't care. If they do renew, sales must be low.

I'm a little dizzy right now...must be all the spinning.

Qui Gon Jim 02-04-08 03:28 PM

I don't think that they don't car, quite the contrary. I am sure that they don't want to give away movies for free, just like I am sure that Toshiba does not either.

As I said, I think they are testing to see if taking away those five discs moves the needle on sales at all. If it does, I think they will re-institute the offer.

londonhogfan 02-06-08 09:19 AM

Ya, I had to wait until I got my taxes back (coming this week) to get a Blu Ray PLayer (PS3), but without the promo I'm just gonna wait till next year for newer standalone players and lower prices.

Bob330i 02-07-08 05:16 PM

You guys know that the form was updated and 5 mail in titles is good until the end of the month right?

Have you read the thread? The HD form was updated, not the BD form. Unless you found a new one. Please share details.

Living Dead 02-08-08 12:30 AM

I just sent mine in last week. I agree the selection was weak, but hey, they're free.

Knives 02-08-08 03:58 AM

Do the blu-rays they send say

"NOT FOR RESALE" ?

LivingINClip 02-08-08 09:22 AM

I'm more curious on how long it will take to get 'em. I mailed mine off in early DEC and still nothing.
