HDM comparison thread

Is there a list anywhere showing dual format releases that are better on one format versus the other?

Thought with some people starting to replace their HD DVD versions for Blu-ray, it would be interesting to see which titles might be worth hanging onto and/or any Blu-ray titles that might see improvements at some point.

---------------------------------

This is what I've put together thusfar (with some info from http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/). Please post corrections, formatting feedback, additions, etc.

If anyone has a more appealing way to list the info, please feel free to post/PM me with it and I'll use that instead.

Training Day is definitely better on HD-DVD than it is on Blu-Ray.

There is a list of Warner titles that are supposedly better on HD DVD than their Blu-ray counter parts at http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/

Titles which feature superior audio on HD DVD:

- Happy Feet (TrueHD)
- The Phantom of the Opera (TrueHD)
- Superman Returns (TrueHD)
- Training Day (TrueHD)

Titles which feature VC-1 encodes on HD DVD but MPEG-2 on BD:

- The Fugitive
- Good Night, and Good Luck
- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
- Rumor Has It
- Space Cowboys
- Training Day

Titles which are limited to 1080i output on BD:

- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (replacement programme expected)

Titles which feature more extras on HD DVD:

- 300
- Blood Diamond
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- Pan's Labyrinth (New Line)
- Troy: Director's Cut

Sopranos Season 6, Pt. 1 has lossless audio on BD but not on HD DVD.

Also, the reviews I have read of Fugitive, GN&GL and KKBB give equal PQ ratings to the BD and HD DVD.

Good to hear. At least one of those are something I hope to pick up at some point.

If there isn't a list of these on here already, and interest, I can add mentioned ones to the first post (and omit the above three).

I don't think you need to omit them.

Some people have it in for MPEG2, so if they want to avoid it, at least they'll know what titles have it.

Shooter on HD DVD has a slightly better DD+(1.5 mbps) soundtrack versus BD's regular DD(640kbps). HD DVD is AVC MPEG-4 on HD DVD, MPEG-2 on BD (apparently no visual difference). I believe the BD version is possibly OOP(Paramount), but for how long?

When I started a similar thread people replied that when a title was on both there was no difference. What changed?

It would be a big blow to lose HD-DVD if the quality on those discs was much better than the BD of the same movie. And if there is a signiifcant difference it would interest me to why that would be. Why not put equal quality on both formats (not talking extras)?

Sopranos Season 6 Part 1 on Blu-ray has PCM but if you don't have the equipment for it, you can only get 2 channels via optical.

That doesn't mean it's not better on Blu-Ray.

If we're going to list HD DVD titles with lossless as better than their Blu-Ray counterparts, then it applies to Sopranos as well.

The German Silent Hill HD-DVD is better than the U.S. Blu-ray.

Either you don't know how to read or you are imagining stuff that is not there because I never said anything about it being worse.

Sorry dude. I guess I assumed.

Certainly seemed like you were pointing out a negative. No need to get insulting.

Not just Shooter, but all Paramount titles use 1.5 Mbps DD+ on HD DVD while their Blu-ray counterparts only got 640k regular DD....
I sure hope Paramount embraces lossless TrueHD if they go back to Blu...I would hate to have to be stuck with inferior lossy soundtracks...

Agreed. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. There is nothing inherent to AVC that makes it better, quality-wise than MPEG2, same would go for the audio codecs. It is the implementation of the codecs that affect which is superior. It is too easy to say that title X on DB is not as good as it is on HD DVD because they used MPEG2 on BD. What if in a side-by-side they are indistinguishable?

Does anyone have an opinion on Tim Burton's Corpse Bride?

I understand the Blu-ray has legacy DD, while the HD DVD has DD+.

They are the exact same bitrate so they should be identical.

The Reservoir Dogs Dutch HD-DVD has a truckload of extras that are MIA on the Blu-ray version. The PQ and AQ are identical. Plus the HD-DVD is $3 cheaper, even as an import!

Training Day is probably the easiest answer. The BD has the same 5.1 audio as the DVD.

Yeah, the extras on the RESERVOIR DOGS Blu-ray are pretty craptacular. I was disappointed about how pathetic they were (but bought it anyway for the film itself)
