There is no PAL or NTSC with BRs, so no speed up. And it has been confirmed that it is indeed the Director's Cut. |

No one had asked about the play speed that I saw. And I must have missed your post the first time through on True HD. So sorry. And you mentioned a non-existant Criterion version that you compared the PQ to, but never actually said what the runtime was for this version that I saw- someone even asked for the runtime shortly after that, but you never posted it. If I missed that as well, sorry again. I did read all the pages before posting. Lovely of you to post just to not answer though. Would it have taken much more time to answer than to post nothing helpful

Not really.

I thought the picture quality was rather disappointing. It wasn't as sharp as I was expecting and there was some noise throughout practically the whole movie, as if they screwed up in transfering the grain. It's better than the bootleg edition, but certainly not demo material. Also, the concert parts weren't as great sounding as I would have hoped :(. Pretty cheap for an import, though.

Received my copy from Sendit last night. Since this is one of my favorite movies, I was eager to give it a spin. Overall it's a good disc but not reference by any means. I'm going to have to agree with cartman in the fact that the transfer wasn't very sharp. It did have it's moments but overall it looked a little soft. The TrueHD track was very good but the surrounds are mostly confined to the soundtrack since it's a dialog heavy movie.
The extra features were disappointing though and were presented in SD. I don't think this is a disappointing release as it's still the best this film has looked or sounded but I'm hoping it gets a better release in the U.S. |
So would you two recommend it or wait for a R1 release for someone who owns Untitled.
|
I'd only recommend importing it if you really like the movie. Again, it is an upgrade, just not a great one, and who knows when Dreamworks will release it over here (and currently it would be on HD DVD, but that'll probabbly change in the near future).
|
Thanks. I love the movie though and just got my shipping notice. So no turning back now.
|
I agree with cartman. I'm a huge fan of the movie so it was a no-brainer for me.

Bummer about the reviews. Still waiting for my Amazon UK order.

Might have missed this mentioned, but is this only the extended or is the original theatrical version on the disc also?
Thanks |

Tempted to get this, but having second thoughts after hearing about the PQ and audio. I've got the Bootleg version and have been wanting to watch the director's cut (never have for some reason).

I watched this last night, and I thought the print looked great. It isn't eye popping HD as Cartman stated, not reference material.
But, I think the Blu-Ray captures perfectly the visual look Crowe desired for the film. I am a big fan of Almost Famous, I saw it twice in the theaters and watched the SD DVD at least 3 times, and I am confident that the Blu-Ray is significantly better than the SD visually and closer to the look the film had in the theaters. But, as for the Audio, I will have to concur completely with Cartman's post. I too was hoping for some great sound moments in the concert parts of the film, and I didn't hear any improvement in the Audio over the SD. |
I'm a huge fan of the film, and would have imported the BD if it was absolutely amazing. But at this point, I'll probably wait for the eventual domestic release, the "Bootleg" set will hold me for now. I got enough other crap to buy anyway.

This is probably the right move for most people as it is certainly not a BR release where the upgrade in VQ will be obvious to everyone. It would be great if the evenual Dreamworks BR release in the US would improve the AQ and bring the Extras. I don't think the domestic release will improve upon the VQ of this release however, because I think this is a case where this is how the film is meant by the filmmaker to look. |
Still waiting on mine to arrive from Amazon.co.uk grrrr...
|
Same here.
|
Arrived today. Wasn't expecting the thicker case. Probably watch it later on in the week.
|
Mine came yesterday. Did yours have an obnoxious sticker on the case under the shrinkwrap?

On the booklet inside, there's a pic of Jerry Maguire for coming soon. I'll probably pick up the domestic release of it. I also just realized this is the 3rd time I've bought Almost Famous. |
Yeah, I started to freak out over that sticker at first, but was happy that it came right off. And yes, it is certainly a thicker more sturdy case than any of my others.
