At what price would you buy a Blu-ray player?

As of right now. 62.73% of you (69 out of 110) have said that you will not be picking up a Blu-ray player soon (see Who here will be buying a Blu-Ray player within the next month?). Many have mentioned price as a major issue. At what price point would you buy a Blu-ray player? If you already own a BD player, what do you think is a (realistic) good price to drive the sales of Blu-ray?

jPoD_TGN 01-08-08 04:12 PM

PS3 at a decent price or cheap Blu-Ray player.

SoSpacey 01-08-08 04:12 PM

moving to HD? or is this someone who has jumped in already?

i might buy a second around $200 but I paid $499 for my first.

edit: sorry, hit the submit button by accident....

Yavin 01-08-08 04:15 PM

I think $250 would be my magic number. The only reason I'm even planning on getting a PS3 is because as of right now I have worked up almost $200 in credit at Best Buy and after the sales of items I've gotten for free for cash it should only work out to costing me around $100-$150 out of pocket.

Tolhurst 01-08-08 04:17 PM

what profile is the current $300 player - I wouldn't want a player that's already outdated - but $200 is the price for the applicable player I would pay

I believe that would be Profile 1.0. I saw someone trading in their A3 for a Sony Profile 1.0 player the other day and really felt like telling them. I can't imagine how many people are buying non-upgradeable Profile 1.0 players now not knowing that it won't be able to play (most, if not) all of the new 1.1 Blu-Ray discs coming out, starting last week.

Trelach24 01-08-08 04:24 PM

If you're not counting the PS3, I'd buy a blu ray player at $200 in a heartbeat.

Mr. Cinema 01-08-08 04:25 PM

I own 2 players. BD was able to outsell HD DVD in standalone players during December, so I think the price is closer than most think. With the format war clearing up, I think we'll see a bigger increase in sales. I would say when Universal and Paramount announce their BD plans, a $250 price point would be fine. That gives you access to all of the studios' HD catalog.

Brian Shannon 01-08-08 04:30 PM

I don't care about price. A finished spec and a solid player are all that matters to me. I'll buy two when that happens.

chiefsrule2k6 01-08-08 04:34 PM

What is the best way to see what version of Sony player you have (profile wise)?
I have the BDP-S300.

arbogast777 01-08-08 04:35 PM

Most of the players I see now are $399, but the highest the poll goes is $300...

TheMovieman 01-08-08 04:35 PM

$250 for a 1.1 machine (and I prefer the Panny BD30). I'm hoping by year's end it'll be heavily discounted from where it is now ($400-500) with the BD50 coming out.

abintra 01-08-08 04:37 PM

$150 for me (the closer to $100 the better). I gather that will be sometime yet but if there was a quality option at that price point currently I likely wouldn't hesitate.

If it wasn't for the war ending, I was about to purchase my first HDTV, a receiver upgrade and an HD player (part of the reason I even waited until now was the rumors of something happening in January). That will likely be postponed to some degree now.

Concorde 01-08-08 04:43 PM

The same price as my beloved A2 was, which was $98.

Well, at Amazon.com, the Samsung BD-P1400 sells for $349.99, and the Sony BDP-S300 sells for $356.17. At many of the discount websites, you'll find the entry level BD players for closer to $300. I think it's safe to say that the current street price is ~$300.

islandclaws 01-08-08 04:58 PM

$200, same as I paid for my A3. I'm not plunking down over $200 for another next-gen player. Oh, and it better be Profile 1.1 compliant, too.

If they would buy a BD player for $399, they wouldn't be waiting until prices drop. The idea is to have prices lower than current prices.

I personally will buy a 2nd BD player once they reach $150 or so.

mzupeman2 01-08-08 05:15 PM

So, straighten me out here. What player(s) out right now (not the PS3) are profile 1.1, and what price are they hovering at?

Cosmic Bus 01-08-08 05:48 PM

Less than $200, preferrably closer to $150 (which is what I opted for on the poll).

That your average consumer-level standalone player is still being released at $350+ is pretty ridiculous to me, given the price of the PS3 and knowing that these players are more or less "incomplete" and may not even work properly with some new/upcoming titles. Pretty screwed-up system Sony's got going here.

tofferman 01-08-08 05:49 PM

The BB near me had a managers special price of $369 for the PS3 40gb. Does that seem to be a fair price (assuming your not concerned with backwards compatibility)?

moviewizguy 01-08-08 05:54 PM

Since I bought an HD player...for me to buy Blu Ray will depend if it'll go cheaper next year. OR, I can just wait until there's a PS4 and a PS3 will be cheap. There will always be more new technology and the older ones (Blu Ray and PS3) will definately be cheap. So I'm willing to buy it for $100-$200 just like the HD DVD player. I just HOPE it'll cost that much next year.

Draven 01-08-08 06:04 PM

$300 with 10 movies, just like my HD DVD player. For a standalone anyway.

Though I'm still gonna get a PS3, mostly to complete the trifecta. The Blu-Ray is a "bonus".

Kocheese99 01-08-08 06:05 PM

full spec sub $300. Or a decent dual player sub $600. Whichever comes first.

Bill Geiger 01-08-08 06:27 PM

I'll probably buy a PS3 or Panasonic DMP-BD30 this week for $400.00+. No biggie.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 -- found between $400.00 and $500.00
