Quoted for truth.
Furthermore, 75% of the people on this forum say they won't spend more than $200 on a player and they are the target audience.

This is also how I feel. I finally got into HD-DVD but only because I got the player for $150 and 12 free movies. The player was basically free. BD will come down in price eventually, but how long will it take to reach the magical $200 range? And is $200 still too much for the average consumer to drop DVD which looks perfectly good on their TV? The only way BD becomes hugely widespread is if studios stop releasing on DVD and exclusively onto BD only. It took a while for VHS to be phased out so I don't think DVD is going anywhere anytime soon.

Already having a PS3, I'd need it to be around $150.

^^ agreed.

I spent $500 on an 80GB PS3. I won't buy a stand alone player anytime soon. I wouldn't have spent $500 on a stand alone player, $200 would probably be the price point that would get me to buy one. I could justify $500 for the PS3 since it's also a nice game system, the 10 free Blu-rays I got with it also helped.

I waited to get an A2 until the $99 price at Walmart.

I wasn't even considering buying an HD DVD player until it fell below $200, and was sold when I got one for $100. When BD players fall below $200, I'll go there, too, but that doesn't look like it will be anytime soon.

I said $150, but anywhere between $200 and $150 for a fully featured 1.1 player, and I'd think about it. At $150 or less, I'd definitely buy.

And that will be even longer for us in Canada, from the looks of things. I believe that the Blu-Ray player prices here are at least $100 more than the US.

I will buy one when they get down probably under $150, but definetly under $100. I got into the dvd game at that price, I got into hd dvd at that price, and that is the price I will pay for blu-ray. :)

I hope I am wrong but I do not feel the recent drops in hardware prices due to competition will come to a screeching halt. Sony has historically been known to keep it's products priced higher than comparable products. I see no reason why they would go against their nature. Sadly for me, with Amazon's $179 price w/movies for HD-DVD, I was expecting to see ~$150 in the very near future. Now I don't know that a similar pricepoint for equal hardware is anywhere near being realistic. I have never looked at br seriously and was unaware of the product they are actually selling...with lacking features and incompatibilities looming.

p.s...if not obvious, my price would have been $100-$150 to jump into full hd playback.

Can anyone wager a guess as to when the 40 GB PS3 will come down in price to about $150 (based on the price drops taken for the PS2)?

Tolhurst 01-09-08 05:07 PM

well the ps2 was never $400 to begin with so it's really hard to say (5 years?), but I imagine a stand alone player will reach that price point well before a ps3 ever does
