How much $ did YOU invest in HD DVD?

I am someone who is format neutral... a Toshiba A20 and a PS3. I have about 40 HD DVD's, and about 10 Blu-rays. Unlike many around here, I was all for the format war, with the hopes that it would bring down title pricing (which it did). IF HD DVD goes the way of the dodo, I'm still OK with that, as my A20 is a good upconverter, and the HD DVD discs out there aren't going away anytime soon either. Of course I was not an early adoptor of either technology, so the $200 bucks (with a buttload of free movies and B1G1's, etc, etc) I paid for my HD DVD player makes this recent news a bit easier to swallow. I was curious however, how much money others have shelled out to the HD DVD side of this "war"?

Arpeggi 01-05-08 07:38 AM

$380 for player
75 titles for about $15 average.

Almost $1500 :(

speedyray 01-05-08 08:06 AM

Right around the sam as Arpeggi.

76 titles and 2 players for around 1500

I think I will pick up an extra player if they have a fire sale and then get a good combo when one becomes available at a good price.

Maxflier 01-05-08 08:13 AM

Over 2 grand.
$500 player on lauch day and over 100 titles.

jackson walker 01-05-08 08:29 AM

Exactly $19.99. I was able to get in on that infamous Circuit City "Complete Matrix Trilogy" box set mistake. My plan was to swap it for the Blu-ray version when W.B. finally released it. Maybe my plan went awry.

RockyMtnBri 01-05-08 08:37 AM

$96 for my HD-A2 (price matched at Circuit City when the Wal-Mart sale was on) and about 19 titles (most were $19.99 or less with BOGOs) so nearly a grand. I have 92 Blu-Ray discs.

stingermck 01-05-08 08:47 AM

$300 for player, 100 titles

flix1 01-05-08 08:48 AM

I dropped $200+tax on the A3, and amazingly only $75 total on the 20 HD-DVD titles I had (10 of them were free for buying the player).

So, a grand total of just under $300.

TheNightFlier 01-05-08 08:54 AM

$100 on the player and about $50 for the 16 HD titles I have (5 free, and 5 mail-ins). The others I picked up in B1G1 sales.

ryuryu2949 01-05-08 09:04 AM

Since nobody has said it yet, let me be the first:

$0.00

Full BD supporter, although I must admit I was *about* to buy one of the cheapo Toshiba players with all the free movies. So I was *close* to being format neutral.

I don't mean to gloat--hopefully those who spent a bunch on HDDVD will enjoy their movies for a long time to come.

bluetoast 01-05-08 09:08 AM

Around $179 for the 360 player, and $28 for Blade Runner 5-Disc. But I got 9 other discs for free (5 of which still aren't here).

mzupeman2 01-05-08 09:09 AM

I'd say probably close to a thousand bucks all together.

No, I actually was being sincere. So please Mr. Cool New Member (since 2004), keep insulting me and bringing venom to the table.

WBs announcement was perfectly timed for the BD camp. As I said, I have been close to buying a BD player for awhile now (although their DVDs and probably HDDVDs suck, Universal remains the studio for most of my favorite movies). So if WB stayed neutral following CES, I would have made the jump.

chanster 01-05-08 09:37 AM

Yeah well the thread iis about how much you spent. You spent 0, so your post is somewhat irrelevant and not really applicable.

Yeah, you do actually.

=====================================================

Between my player and the discs, I think I've spent about $500 to date.

Well, <$50 is a choice, and unless I missed the memo, you could not buy a HDDVD player for less than $50. So my post is most certainly applicable.

chanster 01-05-08 09:45 AM

Keep convincing yourself of that. You even know your post sounds condescending with your "I don't mean to gloat". A few posts above is a person who only spent $19.99.

No, I don't. Don't get me wrong--I was thrilled *at first* that my format will likely win and happy that I did not pull the trigger on buying Red. But then I felt bad for those who did. [Confession: I supported the Sega Master System over Nintendo. So I have been there.]

Anyway, Universal and Paramount likely won't put out Blu for awhile, and some of the Toshiba's really are tremendous upconverters (especially if you bought for less than $200).

chanster 01-05-08 09:48 AM

People don't want or need your sympathies. A lot of people are happy with their purchase, even if or when HD DVD goes way of the dodo. I "invested" probably around $250, which includes the A2 which I needed to upconvert my DVDs.

Jericho 01-05-08 09:52 AM

Probably a lot. I have an HD-A2 and 79 movies as of now. I'm sure I'll add a few more in the coming months as well. I don't feel the money was wasted, however. I have a good player and plenty of movies that I was able to get for cheap. I guess it's easier for me as I have a Blu-Ray player too, so I don't need to go out and get something new. And I don't expect the format to be totally abandoned. Future players may very well support HD DVD. Like if Toshiba makes a Blu-Ray player one day, it could very well support HD DVD playback too. It'll certainly drop in cost in and be doable.

Bill Geiger 01-05-08 10:01 AM

$83.xx for the A2
17 HD Titles ($13.00 average at least)

As far as gloating, I don't think so. I wouldn't gloat regardless. If prices go down, we win, you lose because you paid much more than we did. Either way you look at it, it is a lose-lose for you. But with everything in life, that is just how it is.

lcnickell 01-05-08 10:02 AM

spent $0 as well.

never thought for a second both formats could survive.

when ps3 came out, knew Blu-Ray was the way to go.

about 30-35 titles on Blu-ray , along with ps3,

I too once considered HD-DVD when player got really cheap, along with getting 10+ movies.- But it was for about a milli-second.

The Bus 01-05-08 10:02 AM

Somewhere north of a $1000: two players (one as a gift). About two dozen titles.

I will probably spend another $500 on so on the remaining lifetime of the format.

RichC2 01-05-08 10:09 AM

$210 for the Player + 3 movies + 5 movies = Player + 8 movies.
4 x movies WHV order = $15.20 a piece after tax = $60.80
Blade Runner, Pan's, The Kingdom = $76
Harry Potter + Bourne Ultimatum = $30
Hot Fuzz = $30
Elizabeth = $20

So, I dunno, about $430. I'm perfectly content with all my purchases thus far as well and foresee quite a few more.

islandclaws 01-05-08 10:21 AM

I got my A3 for $199. I have about 40 HD DVDs, some I got on promos and sales so I'm going to guess I spent around $600-700 there. I'm probably somewhere in the $1000-1100 club. But it's not like all my stuff isn't going to work thanks to WB's announcement, I just won't buy anymore.

wewantflair 01-05-08 10:28 AM

Let's say I'm at least 5x higher than the highest quoted number in this thread so far. Plus I got my brother an A3 + movies for Xmas.

dlibby 01-05-08 10:41 AM

A little under $450 total for an HD-A30 player and 29 movies (12 of which came with the purchase (2 + 5 from rebate + 5 from selected list). Except for Blade Runner, all have been BOGO's from Amazon or Best Buy...

Drexl 01-05-08 10:42 AM

I spent probably around $1200 or so. I feel bad for those who decided to upgrade from 1st- to 2nd- to 3rd-generation players, especially if one or more of those were the higher-end models like the XA2. While I spent $500 for the A1, it wasn't until the $99 sale that I got another player.

Maybe this will teach us not to get involved in future format wars, like a particular one brewing between MS, Sony, Apple, and others.

See, if enough people stay out of that one, we won't have to worry about downloads taking over. :)

TheMovieman 01-05-08 10:48 AM

Probably around $700, though that includes 3 HD-DVD players (2 for me, 1 for my sister) and 55+ HD-DVDs.

Engel07 01-05-08 10:54 AM

about $400....

I don't care...it's only money.

If I can lose $1000 in a minute at Las Vegas, then is peanuts LOL.

Deftones 01-05-08 10:59 AM

Well, let's see, I've bought one movie and the HD-DVD add on or Xbox. So, about $230. I got an A3 for Christmas as a gift, with all the extra movies. So, not much.

Greg613 01-05-08 11:01 AM

I spent about $320. For Planet Earth and 3 other movies and the Toshiba A2.

I sent off for my free movies back in August, now I am just hoping that I receive them before they stop making them.

GenPion 01-05-08 11:16 AM

I spent around $40 total. I had purchased an Upconverting Phillips DVD Player almost exactly a month before the $100 HD-DVD Player's Hit. I returned it to Best Buy and used that credit, along a $10 Reward Zone Certificate, to bring the total down to around $35. I got the three free HD-DVD's so I picked up Hot Fuzz (already had it on DVD but wanted to give it to a friend and heard how this one had reference quality video), The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. I sold my King Kong 2-Disc Collectors Edition to Upgrade to the HD-DVD Version and wound up spending about $5 to do so. I was just getting in to this High Definition game all together and had purchased my HDTV (an Olevia 27" for $400) when on sale at Circuit City just three or four weeks before.

The only other HD-DVD I have at the moment is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I got it as a Christmas present... so while it stings that the rest of the series won't be released on this format (and I was planning on upgrading the other four) at least I can't say it hurt my wallet.

I know for as little as I spent I shouldn't feel bad. Still, it stings knowing that my player might soon be 'dead'. As long as it still works I will happy to hold on to it though. It's not like the discs I currently own are going to stop being in High Definition. Also, the upconverter I purchased (in my opinion, anyway) was not as good as an Upconverter on the HD-DVD player (except with older full-frame videos.... recently I've been watching a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and X-Files episodes - it seems to me the quality is not as good as on my old TV I used to have - as for this, not to go off topic, but does anyone know if it's because I'm watching in 1080i over 720p? That's the highest level of quality my setup can go).

pricdews 01-05-08 11:36 AM

~$110 for the A3 (with 300, Bourne Identity) from Amazon, still gotta send off for the 5 free movies.

I'm closely watching how fast Universal & Paramount react (I may be renting for a while longer). I suspect the A3 will get unplugged within the next few monts, though I'm considering using it as an upconverter (do PS3s wear out?) except that so far I'm having trouble with response time for pausing.

darkside 01-05-08 11:49 AM

Easily close to $2000 and I'm quite happy about that. I have been enjoying HD movies since early 2006 instead of wasting money on standard DVDs. I will continue to use my HD DVD player and watch my HD DVDs. I will convert over some HD DVDs to BD discs if I can do it at no extra cost and will mostly buy BDs going forward.

However, I knew that one format would die at some point and have no issues with that. My HD DVD collection will continue to function and this announcement from Warner does nothing to hurt my overall HD movie collection.

XavierMike 01-05-08 11:52 AM

Between an A1 and movies around $700.

Willh51 01-05-08 11:54 AM

$199 for the player and if you don't count freebies, like $75 for dvds.

Tarantino 01-05-08 11:54 AM

Lets see...

HD-DVD Add on 360 - $180
Babel - $10
Blood Diamond - Free
Bourne Identity - Free
Bourne Supremacy - $25
Bourne Ultimatum - $25
Carlitos Way - Free
Flags Of Our Fathers - $11
Goodfellas - $16
Good Shepherd - $10
Heroes - Free
The Hitcher - Free (Gift)
Oceans 11, 12, 13 - Free (Gift)
Old School - $24
Pan's Labyrinth - $25
Transformers - $26

So...around $350 total. Love my stuff though!
