How much $ did YOU invest in HD DVD?
 

I am someone who is format neutral... a Toshiba A20 and a PS3. I have about 40 HD DVD's, and about 10 Blu-rays. Unlike many around here, I was all for the format war, with the hopes that it would bring down title pricing (which it did). IF HD DVD goes the way of the dodo, I'm still OK with that, as my A20 is a good upconverter, and the HD DVD discs out there aren't going away anytime soon either. Of course I was not an early adoptor of either technology, so the $200 bucks (with a buttload of free movies and B1G1's, etc, etc) I paid for my HD DVD player makes this recent news a bit easier to swallow. I was curious however, how much money others have shelled out to the HD DVD side of this "war"?

I think I will pick up an extra player if they have a fire sale and then get a good combo when one becomes available at a good price.

Exactly $19.99. I was able to get in on that infamous Circuit City "Complete Matrix Trilogy" box set mistake. My plan was to swap it for the Blu-ray version when W.B. finally released it. Maybe my plan went awry.

$96 for my HD-A2 (price matched at Circuit City when the Wal-Mart sale was on) and about 19 titles (most were $19.99 or less with BOGOs) so nearly a grand. I have 92 Blu-Ray discs.

$300 for player, 100 titles

I dropped $200+tax on the A3, and amazingly only $75 total on the 20 HD-DVD titles I had (10 of them were free for buying the player).

So, a grand total of just under $300.

$100 on the player and about $50 for the 16 HD titles I have (5 free, and 5 mail-ins). The others I picked up in B1G1 sales.

Full BD supporter, although I must admit I was *about* to buy one of the cheapo Toshiba players with all the free movies. So I was *close* to being format neutral.

I don't mean to gloat--hopefully those who spent a bunch on HDDVD will enjoy their movies for a long time to come.

Around $179 for the 360 player, and $28 for Blade Runner 5-Disc. But I got 9 other discs for free (5 of which still aren't here).

I'd say probably close to a thousand bucks all together.

WBs announcement was perfectly timed for the BD camp. As I said, I have been close to buying a BD player for awhile now (although their DVDs and probably HDDVDs suck, Universal remains the studio for most of my favorite movies). So if WB stayed neutral following CES, I would have made the jump.

Well, <$50 is a choice, and unless I missed the memo, you could not buy a HDDVD player for less than $50. So my post is most certainly applicable.

Keep convincing yourself of that. You even know your post sounds condescending with your "I don't mean to gloat". A few posts above is a person who only spent $19.99.

No, I don't. Don't get me wrong--I was thrilled *at first* that my format will likely win and happy that I did not pull the trigger on buying Red. But then I felt bad for those who did. [Confession: I supported the Sega Master System over Nintendo. So I have been there.]

Anyway, Universal and Paramount likely won't put out Blu for awhile, and some of the Toshiba's really are tremendous upconverters (especially if you bought for less than $200).

People don't want or need your sympathies. A lot of people are happy with their purchase, even if or when HD DVD goes way of the dodo. I "invested" probably around $250, which includes the A2 which I needed to upconvert my DVDs.

Probably a lot. I have an HD-A2 and 79 movies as of now. I'm sure I'll add a few more in the coming months as well. I don't feel the money was wasted, however. I have a good player and plenty of movies that I was able to get for cheap. I guess it's easier for me as I have a Blu-Ray player too, so I don't need to go out and get something new. And I don't expect the format to be totally abandoned. Future players may very well support HD DVD. Like if Toshiba makes a Blu-Ray player one day, it could very well support HD DVD playback too. It'll certainly drop in cost in and be doable.

As far as gloating, I don't think so. I wouldn't gloat regardless. If prices go down, we win, you lose because you paid much more than we did. Either way you look at it, it is a lose-lose for you. But with everything in life, that is just how it is.

when ps3 came out, knew Blu-Ray was the way to go.

I too once considered HD-DVD when player got really cheap, along with getting 10+ movies.- But it was for about a milli-second.

Somewhere north of a $1000: two players (one as a gift). About two dozen titles.

I will probably spend another $500 on so on the remaining lifetime of the format.
