As others have said, I'll now have to buy BD for the new WB titles but I'll still buy any HD title that comes out just like I normally would have. I'm a Red Sox fan so I'm used to the "sinking ship" feeling...though, if the Red Sox can turn it around like they have since 2004 anything is possible Don't give up HD

I'm fairly sure he could have traded them in to DVDplanet and got more, though it would be in-store credit only. I wouldn't be surprised if people are selling Hd-dvd titles out of frustration with the industry and have no intention of buying anymore. They just want to dump them quickly.

Personally, I'm thinking of listing my entire 200+ HD-dvd collection on Ebay at an insane price just to see if someone bids on it.

No more HD DVD's for me unless there is some HD DVD exclusives that come out.
Ya I took a risk into buying early in the format wars, and I am fine with that, that was my choice, its cool I will still enjoy my HD DVD's and I am not reselling them. But from here on out it doesn't make sense to continue buying into a dead format, it just isn't a good idea. I will pick up a few here and there if they are on major sale/clearance, but its going to be few and far between.

That is where 90% of my SACD collection came from. I agree they never got cheap, but they were also available in much smaller quantities than HD DVDs.

I got the hd-dvd for xbox 360 for a good price back at launch time and have enjoyed the 10 hd dvd movies I have.

So moving to blu ray if it the only one left in a year is ok, just not a massive sony fan, but if thats the format I will get one.

Would get Casino Royale as my first BR movie.

Maybe at CES this week we'll here other HD DVD news.

Will still buy up HD discs, unless they're better or cheaper on BR. It's dumb to hold out for Universal and Paramount on Blu until they make the switch - that could be years if ever.

I'm not jumping on this mass panic and "it's over keke!" bandwagon.

Oh yeah! There are still two studios that are HD-DVD only. My player is not going to quit working so I'm going to use it. My player is a much better up converter than my old one, so I will also buy SD DVD for quite a while longer also.

I'm really not so sure any HD Disc format is going to end up the winner. Watch for Microsoft to try and strike back with a vengeance offering some kind of HD download service.

HD download service won't require an HD-DVD player. That really wouldn't be too relevant. Unless you are the type of person who doesn't like to own a hard copy.

I think that's something common between J6P and those of us here, both segments I think want to own a hard copy of a movie...

Hey, are we talking about me here?

As I said in the other thread, I had another lot of 7 sell for $80. Most of my HD's were free or $7 with 4 for 1 trade in's at Movie Stop with lots of old crappy SD-DVD's. So its not like I was paying $27-$35 per movie

I knew I could make more if I listed them individually, but yes, I was feeling lazy, and just made 2 lots.

I went through my collection and kept HD Exclusives, and movies I couldn't live with out. The rest were good movies, but nothing I need to own right now. With the WB announcement I decided to go neutral, take movies I didnt need right now, and get a Blu-Ray player and just do both.

I also will admit, I bought many HD's just to help the format sales. Not that they were movies I didn't want to own, I just push the rush on getting them.

But hey, I still have 57 HD's damnit

As far as future purchases, even before the announcement there was nothing this month I wanted, so I suppose next may be Beowulf.

We just felt bad for you. No one here wants you to get cheated. Hell, as long as you got what you wanted for them I have no issues. It is easier to sell in big groups. I sold a bunch individually and it is a pain to deal with shipping.

I cut my own HD DVD collection by about 20 discs. Most I replaced, some I shouldn't have bought in the first place or got free and just unloaded. I probably have another 10 or so I want to get rid of. I bought way too many because they were either super cheap or I wanted them just for the AV experience. Luckily I knew someone that just got a player and couldn't care less about HD DVD dying. They bought 8 off of me for $80 with no ebay hassles.

Exactly. I had a good stack of movies in the floor, and just sighed, "damn I don't want to deal with all this" I just wanted to bounce titles I didn't need, and go neutral. Which thinking back I should have last year, rather than hoarding movies on 1 side.

I agree about sometimes buying disc just for the AV. "Oh this will look great in HD" This weekends events have opened my eyes to that, and I need to buy movies I really want to own/collect. Not just because it looks great.

Smaller, artier movies like Universal's Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Atonement will likely take forever to come out on Blu-Ray (assuming Universal goes neutral or abandons HD DVD altogether) so I would get those on HD DVD. There are no Universal catalog titles that I want on HD DVD that I already don't own. Paramount has Braveheart, Gladiator, and the Star Trek films but who knows if those will ever come out on HD DVD in light of what has happened.

I just took the plunge a month or two ago, have the 360 add-on, an unopened A3, and 20 or so unopened movies.

If I had a huge HD collection I'd have no problem holding on to them and even buying new ones if the price was right. But given my current state, not really committed yet and still in a position to get almost all my money back, I'm going to return everything and wait for a good BR deal.

I'll be left with the 360 add-on (I had given it to my sister for Christmas, but given the news, I can't lead her into buying into the format, she agreed, and I took it back), and one or two discs that were opened. Still waiting for the 5 freebies in the mail too. I'm either package all that and sell it, or hold on to it for watching whatever may stay HD exclusive, although I imagine that eventually that will be nothing.

I really hate to give up like this, as I weighed the pros and cons and wanted to be a HD backer and for them to "win the war". But given that I can get out with little damage, I think I have to bail.

I'm open to being convinced otherwise of course.....

No it wouldn't be a good idea to buy any HD DVDs ever again. Especially Paramount titles. As for Universal, they will probably not support Blu-ray until they have to. But I'm predicting you will hear an announcement to this before the end of the summer. As for Paramount, they weren't releasing many titles on HD DVD before the announcment, so I think we will hear an announcement from them very very soon. Expect hard to find Paramount blu-rays already in existence to be reproduced and expect Paramount to give back thier incentives to go HD DVD exclusive soon too.

Industry analysts expect Toshiba to go the route of introducing a deck that plays both HD-DVD and Blu ray. It is relativly safe to keep the hd-dvd's you have or can acquire cheaply.

Parasol Stars,

HD DVDs still play in my machine. HD DVD will be supported in future combo players. Why not continue to buy HD DVDs?

Trevor, if you don't have that many HD DVD movies, then yes, it's better to switch. However, I will say that with a little caution because there are hundreds of titles which will be discontinued, being much cheaper than their Blu-ray versions. Just a thought.

call me crazy, but now I am excited about getting a HD DVD player. No, seriously - hear me out.

very shortly (March?) HD DVD players should be had for even less than the previously $99. I am thinking $70? For that, it is a great additional DVD player for normal SDs.

But the real thing that I am excited about is that the movies themselves should be on 'fire sale' soon. What is the point of stores having HD DVD movies if people are no longer buying the hardware and BD is the future of high def? I can foresee a 2/$15 bargain bin at walmart, blockbuster, etc. of HD DVDs. Maybe even lower!

So here is my logic. Wait until the HW and SW get really, really cheap. Get a player and buy as many movies that interest me. Continue to buy HD DVD movies until they stop making them. At that point, get a blu-ray player and buy BD movies that I don't already have on HD DVD.

Worse case, I have another good high scaling DVD player for my SD discs. Best case, I can enjoy high def for a very small price.

I see absolutely no reason to sell my HD DVD player (when I get it) or to buy the BD version of any movie I intend to get on HD DVD. The PQ difference is negligible, but the price differential will be substantial soon.

So me? I'm waiting for the players to get real real cheap and then stock up on movies...

Crazy? maybe....

The only thing that worries me about my HD DVDs is the quality of the Toshiba players. I have an a2 that seems to work fairly well, but I think that my parents' a3 is a POS. I don't want to get into a situation where I'm stuck with media I can't play unless I pony up for a combo player or buy off the grey market.

whoa! I must have missed that point in all these discussions. if the existing hardware is not stable, and Toshiba drops support of the format, then that would be a problem.

Still, I will have to see how cheap these things will drop to. if they ever go down to $50 I think it's worth the risk.

Call me crazy, but I think "less than $400" is still an outrageous price for a DVD player of any kind. This is why I went HD DVD, and why I will stay away from BD until it falls into my affordability range.

I have both formats. I originally bought Blu and then jumped on HD-DVD when the equipment was basically free with the cost of the 10 free discs. The way I look at it, is I've got 40 or so discs that can be used on a dying format. I have two players that will probably last until the next 1800p format. You can't buy many record albums but people still listen to them.

Keep on the faith in Red

Like i said before... when HDM were introduced, a lot of you were saying "oh crap, just more craps, dvds are fine." I used that opportunity liquidated my dvds (most the ones you can buy on HDM, i.e. not rare) at fairly good prices (e.g. HP dvds at $10-$15 a piece). Wait, before that, when i first joined dvdtalk, i did the same with VHS (the only difference was that, i actually made profit on the VHS collection ).

Now, i see another opportunity I can buy hd-dvds cheap!
