Does the new 50th anniversary Blu-ray retain all of the old extras?
yes:

All of the on disc supplements of the original release have been ported over to this release. Full details can be found in Casey's review, linked above. In addition, this new release features one new supplement:

The Sound of a City: Julie Andrews Returns to Salzburg (1080p; 49:47) is a hugely enjoyable tour of sorts, hosted by the wonderful Julie Andrews (whom this documentary helpfully labels "Actress"). Julie returns to many of the locations of the film, while also exploring locales frequented by the real life Von Trapp family. This comes with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack.

Additionally, as mentioned above, a bonus soundtrack CD is included.

Well if hating classics is a prerequisite, I can tell you that I loathe GONE WITH THE WIND. Maybe if it were a musical, I'd have liked it better.

I'm somehow a wannabe film student and haven't see Gone With the Wind. Don't quite know how that happened.

Oh. I was looking at the back of the box at work, and it only listed the commentaries, not any of the second disc supplements.

Re: The Sound of Music in HD on ABC

I saw Gone with the Wind during a 8th grade history class and it is not something I want to revisit.

I have never seen the Sound of Music either but I have bought it on DVD and Blu-ray as Christmas presents.

My understanding is that as a representation of real history, Gone With the Wind is about as useful as Song of the South. Don't know why you'd watch it in a history class . Though it would mean that the teacher wouldn't have an lesson plans for like a week. A have a version from TCM on my DVR, I'll have a look one of these days, but dear God, it's long.

I didn't see it until I was well into my 20s. This may be exclusive to me, but even as a 'student' of film, there's a great number of movies released prior to my birth year that I've never caught up with...these include things like The Sound of Music, On the Waterfront, Singing in the Rain, Some Like It Hot, All About Eve, and just about every John Wayne movie ever made (with a few exceptions, but I still haven't seen The Searchers).

This often makes me wonder if there are movie buffs about 20 years younger than me who have a similar list, but movies like Star Wars and Jaws are on it.

Depends on which edition you buy. The 2-disc set appears to drop a disc of extras from the old release, while replacing it with a new disc with a new hour-long documentary on it. From what I can tell, the 5-disc set has both original discs, the new documentary, a DVD and a soundtrack CD.

2 Disc has the movie, commentaries, sing-along, and new documentary.

5 Disc has all the extras from the previous release plus the new documentary, and a special edition of the soundtrack with 8 new in the US songs.

I think this is true of most anyone who isn't some sort of a professional film critic/scholar. I've never seen Gone With the Wind or The Sound of Music. I'm not even adverse to classics. I love the classics. I've seen all of those other one's you listed, but when there's a hundred years of film history to navigate, there are things you're going to miss. As a film fan it's frustrating to me that I can't watch more, but you know, life.

Damn, I knew that the two-disc set we had at work was too good to be true for the price.

I think it took 4 days to watch it. Maybe she wanted a break from teaching.

We had to watch it again =high school in English and I all remember was one guy saying the girl who played Scarlett was hot. That is all I remember lol.
