Best HD-DVD/Blu-ray of the year?

My vote goes to Blade Runner

Supermallet 12-23-07 05:30 PM

I agree. I'm actually putting together my article on the top 10 HD/BD discs of 2007 right now.

Gizmo 12-23-07 06:04 PM

Lost - Season 3 or Transformers...tough one for me.

Hammer99 12-23-07 06:28 PM

Ratatouille by a nose over Cars.

Sparrow 12-23-07 06:41 PM

Blade Runner (BD) just ahead of Ratatouille, primarily because I had very high expectations for Ratatouille, which were met. Blade Runner far exceeded my expectations, so it gets my vote.

Doughboy 12-23-07 06:57 PM

I don't see how you don't give it to Blade Runner.

5 cuts of the movie, all in HD.
3 1/2 hour long documentary
45 minutes of deleted scenes

And all for a list price of $39.99(what Fox charges for a bare bones disc).

If we're talking Top 10 lists, then the rest in no particular order would be:

Ratatouille(Blu-ray)
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Music Hall(Blu-ray)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind(Blu-ray)
2001(Blu-ray/HD-DVD)
Lost: Season 3(Blu-ray)
300(HD-DVD)
The Ultimate Matrix Collection(HD-DVD)
Pride and Prejudice(HD-DVD)
Children of Men(HD-DVD)

Blade Runner. End thread.

only reason i cant give it to blade runner, is cause it let me down so much. i had never seen it, ordered the 5 disc hd, got it, watched it, and proceeded to wonder why every single person on every single board thinks this is the best movie ever. its a decent film with some interesting ideas, that really just drags on. i know i will enjoy it more after i see it a few more times, but i can definitely wait a while before i so much as think about it again. extremely over rated. the set may be really awesome, but it all comes down to the quality of the film, and sadly blade runner just didn't deliver.

Have you ever considered that everyone else could be right and you're wrong?

I agree that Blade Runner is overrated (not 'extremely' though, but slightly)... still, that set is very, very impressive, especially for the non-briefcase price.

Gizmo 12-23-07 07:30 PM

I have never seen Blade Runner. My briefcase comes tomorrow though...excited.

The Cow 12-23-07 07:46 PM

Good movie, good overall set. Blade Runner.

ian959 12-23-07 08:01 PM

Transformers would be my choice.

advdfreak 12-23-07 08:40 PM

chalk another one up for Blade Runner. I only got the 5 disc HD DVD version cause I cared nothing for the briefcase. The Final Cut is absolutely jaw-dropping.

FantasticVSDoom 12-23-07 08:45 PM

Im going w/ Transformers as of now just because I havent opened my Bladerunner discs yet, and wont get to it until I get back from NC.

Fair enough. If you don't like the movie, that would obviously prevent it from ranking high on your "Best of 2007" list. That's why I didn't place Transformers or Spider-Man 3 on my Top 10, despite both HD releases looking and sounding excellent and having a ton of extras.

That being said, Blade Runner is a freaking amazing film. Certainly not the best ever(that would be The Godfather), but it deserves all the belated accolades it's received.

So.... What is your vote?

RockyMtnBri 12-23-07 09:42 PM

Ratatouille - haven't picked up Blade Runner BD yet.

darkside 12-23-07 09:44 PM

Blade Runner is the only choice I can imagine. $25 for a 5 disc set is one thing, but it is also a set we have wanted for nearly a decade on home video

Different people have different tastes.

I honestly didnt like Transformers... to be honest, I would much rather watch 'The Joy of Painting' reruns.

Painting happy trees > watching car pee on person from gas tank.

Blade Runner followed by Close Encounters for me.

Abrave9 12-24-07 01:20 AM

Blade Runner
Transformers
Hot Fuzz

Engel07 12-24-07 01:39 AM

Blade Runner Briefcase Edition is the BEST that includes best packaging with best improvement.

Oleg 12-24-07 01:50 AM

As several people pointed out, "best" is such a broad adjective. Best overall, i.e. film, extras, video quality, I'd have to say "Blade Runner" by a nose. "Ratatouille" is fantastic and comes in close second overall, trailing only because I don't think it is as much of a classic film as BR, the video quality puts it solidly in first place in the visual category.

I'd also like to add another category, "best surprise". I'd award that one to "Stardust". Definitely didn't expect much from this one, yet it turned out to be a very sweet date flick that my wife and I enjoyed watching and the video quality of the HD release was, IMO, above average.

MoviePage 12-24-07 02:00 AM

Blade Runner is the "Most" HD-DVD/BluRay of the year.

It is not, however, the "Best".

Supermallet 12-24-07 02:14 AM

Except for the many people to whom it is the best.
