Sorry, i am a hetero-sexual male with descended testicles, therefore i don't understand ANY Dr Phil references. Willing and proud to admit that one went wayyy over my head.

I'm picking Transformers as the best overall presentation of HD. Great picture and sound, with loads of interactive features and I loved the movie. Very fun 2 hours. This is the title that helps sell the format and shows what can't be done on dvd.

Lost, Bourne Ultimatum, 2001, 300, Pirates 3, Live Free or Die Hard, Fantastic Four 2, Spiderman 3 were all solid releases.

davidlynchfan 12-25-07 12:08 PM

another nomination should go to: Shooter blu-ray,especially if you ebay it off recently. ;)

slop101 12-26-07 11:14 AM

Blade Runner
Even if you don't like the movie, the quality of the release is not up for question - transfer, extras - you really couldn't ask for anything more.

runner-up:
Hot Fuzz HD

I'm very surprised that Planet Earth is not the unanimous choice. Am I missing something?

DVD Polizei 12-26-07 12:40 PM

Quality-wise, Planet Earth is great. But extras, commentaries, making-of documentaries, might be a little lacking.

Perhaps if PE had come with 4 different versions (of which all are interesting to watch, both entertainment wise and film history wise), a 3.5 hour in depth documentary, an additional disc with a ridiculous amount of other extras, and was as enjoyed by as many as BR is, it could have been voted for. That's a pretty long "perhaps", though.

I guess you didn't specify which Wednesday, so it not being up yet can't be something to get buggered about .

Hey, I have until 11:59 tonight to get published and still keep to my promise. It will be up, I just have other holiday commitments that must be fulfilled.

I ended up making my top 10 favorites (of domestic releases), looking like this (no media specified means it doesn't matter which):

1) Blade Runner
2) 300 HD DVD
3) Ratatouille Blu-ray
4) Transformers HD DVD
5) 2001
6) Harry Potter years 1-5 HD DVD
7) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Blu-ray
8) Ultimate Matrix Collection HD DVD
9) The Bourne Ultimatum HD DVD
10) The Prestige Blu-ray

I chose both the 300 and Potter sets on HD because I really enjoy IME. The one included on 300 was the most "wow" I've had from an odd special feature since the unique use of a subtitle track on the DVD release of "Ghostbusters".

Had I enjoyed "Hot Fuzz" more than I did, it would have knocked "The Prestige" out of the top 10, but I... *ducks*... didn't like it all that much and have watched "The Prestige" so many times, I couldn't not include it on my top 10.

At first, I had "Planet Earth" on the list, but had to bump it due to a few video problems it had. Speaking strictly on audio/video, I don't see any flaws in my choices, which I couldn't say if PE were on there :(.

DMC being the only Pirates movie was for two reasons. First, the screw up with the framing on CotBP (I haven't yet received my replacement) and second the, well, lack of "good movie" that AWE was . I actually enjoyed DMC the most of the three.

Close Encounters might have made the list had I seen it, but I haven't (I've never really enjoyed it, but I can recognize a stupendous release even if I don't like the movie), but again, this is my "favorites" list, though it wouldn't change a whole lot if I were to make an absolute "best of HD for 2007" list (I think I'd only make two alterations).

Agree 100%, that's why the Rat is my #1 and Cars is #1a (only cause the story wasn't as good as the Rat). Blade Runner looks very, very nice for a 25-year-old film, but at no time was I totally blown away by the PQ/AQ (impressed, yes. blown away, no). So even though I've only got the BD briefcase, I'd give Blade Runner the SD of the year for being a very thorough package.... don't know if it would make my top 10 in HD.

I think Hot Fuzz is my favorite release of the year. it was one of the first HD discs i bought, and it really helped win me over on the format. after seeing the film in SD, i was blown away by the quality of the HD version. also, when it comes to awesome extras, this disc has it all.

Nice lists, Suprmallet.

Where's Children of Men?

Hence my disclaimer at the bottom of the article. The list isn't meant to invalidate any of the other great discs that have come out this year.

Arpeggi: I don't think any of the reviewers nominated Children of Men.

I might get a PS3 today, and was looking through this thread for ideas for 3 Blu-Rays to get...from the looks of it, Ratatouille is a definite lock (I already have the Standard, but this is a no brainer upgrade), and possibly Cars for the second.

Engel07 01-02-08 04:41 PM

Make sure you check out amazon.com for the Blu-Ray buy one get one free that is currently going on right now. 6 titles have been removed since it's out of stock. If you have an Amazon Visa card, then you get $5 off from $50 spending (add two titles). I was able to get 4 Harry Potters for $26. Also, don't forget about sending in your free Blu-Ray movies...I believe you get 5 free ones.

Have fun!

Thanks for the tip...I'm interested in Rescue Dawn, need to look at the others.

Also, Ratatouille was out of stock, my dad and I decided on Cars instead...picture is awesome. But I'm still focused on Ratatouille later in the week.

REL77 01-03-08 06:52 AM

My vote for new release is Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix, and for older release is Blade Runner....

brocklanders 01-03-08 04:46 PM

Blade Runner
Bourne Ultimatum
Grand Prix
2001 Space Odyssey
Big Lebowski
Galapagos

But by far the best is Planet Earth. Guarantee you that more people bought an HD player after viewing PE than any other HD release..no contest.

Cant agree at all with Transformers. Not only was the transfer not up to par(IMHO) but the movie itself is horrible. I can only look at CGI for so long without a decent story. Essentially Transformers is a 2 hour video game.

I think 300, Transformers, King Kong, etc. would have a little something to say about that.

monkey 01-03-08 07:39 PM

Definitely Blade Runner.
