My DVD player broke and rather than buy a new one, I put that money towards a Blu-ray player.

I don't think this is really a "why did you get into HD" question as it is "what prompted you to jump in" question. I mean, we all got into it for better quality, so everyone's reason is essentially the same. The only exceptions I could think of would be those who did it because of PiP or some other advanced features, or those who are getting it as a status symbol, which I hope none of us here are doing.

I guess what I would say is that they came out with a (relatively) affordable disc-based HDM format in HD DVD. I would have waited for prices to go down for BD, but when it became apparent that certain studios wouldn't budge, I justified buying a (20GB) PS3 partially because I wanted a new generation game console anyway.

Movies play a key role in my saturday and sunday afternoons lol. It's a great experience and I want the best picture quality available! Had to get the 1080 tv and when walmart advertised that 10 blu-ray offer I was SET.

I didn't want to make the move just yet based on the up and downs of the war. But what the heck? It's hard not buying dvd's anymore but I'm acting accordingly.

This is really a poll to gauge people's reasons for choosing one particular side over the other now, rather than waiting for a resolution to the format war. That we all want to watch movies in their best possible presentation is sort of a given.

Good deals on the players and too many software deals to resist.

The title of the thread is "Why did you make the jump to HD?" not "Why did you choose one side over the other." That is why "Other" is winning.

I agree on that point. I should have appended a "now" to the end of the thread title, but I thought the content of the initial post and the poll question made it clear. Nevertheless, I've added a few extra words to my initial post to try and clarify the point a bit.

Got a PS3 earlier this year, then got the A2 when it went on sale (price match at Circuit City on the Wal-Mart deal).

I couldn't take the pressure any longer from all you people!!!!

Plus, the Kubricks were coming out soon and Blade Runner was announced......

Sooooooo, I bought an XA2 for $499 from Amazon back in late August when they had a 3 free HD DVDs with player deal at the same time as a B2G3 sale.

Yavin, you left out one of the main reasons for going HD, which is simply to see the movies in HD and hear HD audio.

That's probably why everyone is checking off "Other".

To this day, I've never owned a DVD player. I watched DVDs on either a roomate's machine or a console. Finally, I got tired of watching movies on my HDTV on my PS2 (terrible, I know) and decided to look into an upconverting unit like an Oppo. I was close to pulling the trigger then I read that it will only upconvert over HDMI.

So, I figured might as well get the A1. And technically, I still have never owned a DVD player.

Some years ago I purchased an HD display in part to upscale SD DVDs but mostly because I knew HDM was coming. When the HD-A1 came out at a relatively affordable price it was an easy decision to take the plunge. Still waiting on a fully functional, affordable, BD player but hope to get one in the next few months.

I don't see the point in waiting. Why some people are so fearful of ending up with owning a player and discs from the losing side baffles me. As has been pointed out numerous times, if a format loses the war the discs and players will continue to work (and the player will continue to upscale my SD DVD collection). To me there is no downside in being an early adopter because I have been watching high def discs for well over a year now.

I should clarify again the original intent of the poll. We all want to watch movies in their best presentation possible, but I was curious what made those of us who have chosen Blu-Ray or HD-DVD choose that particular format at this stage in the game (when an ultimate winner has yet to be crowned).

I didn't mention it earlier, but some of us have believed from the beginning that both formats would co-exist. For those of us who think that, buying both players or a combo player is the way to go and waiting for a "winner" is pointless.

I realized I should take advantage of having a 1080p DLP with HDMI while it was actually the recent technology

Ditto, I'm in the same minority that finds it highly likely we'll end up with a dual-format future, like the DVD+/-R war. Since it will be a niche anyway, who cares.

I bought the 360 addon drive for $150 back in March 07. That's about how much a hi-def drive was worth to me. I couldn't stand the noise from the 360 but liked the product, and I was low on inputs on my receiver, so out went the 360 drive and my Oppo 970 on ebay and in came the A2 + Matrix + 2 freebies.

I bought the PS3 when I could get a 20GB cheap enough. After selling my PS2 it came to $270 which Blu-ray + PS1 scaling + maybe someday a PS3 game (PS1 via component video wasn't playing nice with my Onkyo 605 or my 37")- the PS3 was worth to that much to me.

I find oddly though that there are few BDs I like. HD-DVD tends to have my favorites and BD only a few - and stripped-down-barebones Fox titles are a no-go for me.

My upconverting DVD playing was going out and didn't like using the PS3 as an everyday player. So got in on a A3 deal and love it. Got it more for the solid upconverting that it does, but have managed to pick up a HD DVD or five

As a gift to myself from getting a nice 4th quarter bonus, I purchased a 52 inch HDTV, and Xbox 360 HD add-on last March.

I picked HD-DVD over Blu-Ray because of the price, and also because my favorite movie, Casino, is from Universal.

I agree. Since the beginning of the formats I have found more of interest on HD DVD and very few BDs that I want, thus far. I have often seen others say the opposite; different tastes in movies I guess. And, as is well known here, there are a number of WB titles out on HD DVD and not yet on BD, many of which I have purchased.

That is why I have been patient in waiting for a better Blu-ray Disc player (I am looking for Profile 1.1, analog outs, and on-board decoding for at least TrueHD). But some of my favorites figure to come out on Blu-ray Disc eventually, and I have already purchased several BDs, so I really would like to get a player in the near future. I may just have to accept legacy audio.

I wanted a Playstation 3 because of Final Fantasy XIII (which I think is still going to be exclusive, right?), so I bought one along with our new LCD TV. This made me a Blu-ray adopter last year. More studios supported BR, so I was happy with my choice...I expected HD-DVD to be dead by this Christmas...

After Paramount/Dreamworks became HD-DVD exclusive, it looked like the war had been prolonged and that it might go well into next year (if not beyond--depending on Warner, maybe?). Heroes came out, Matrix was only on HD-DVD, so, a few months ago, I bit and bought an HDA2 as well...

So now I have both formats...
