Ps3 scratching disks update/rant

Well for those of you who don't know already my ps3, which isn't even broken in yet, has been scratching my disks. I tried taking some pictures but my camera didn't show them that well. The movies still play but who likes scratches? Especially when none of my regular dvd's have a scratch to boot. I handle them very carefully and they are never lent out.

I finally got ahold of playstation. They're sending me a replacement. I guess they have to ship me the shipping package etc. I then asked the rep "what happens about my scratched disks?" After being on hold for 20 mins he comes up with some wacked out excuse saying it's normal. I said no it's not normal. He puts me on hold again and accuses me of putting the disks in wrong. When the Nintendo wii has the same type of loader. None of those are scratched.

It ended with him saying it's normal for the disks to get scratched. Then I'm thinking blu-rays aren't supposed to scratch......Then I thought, if it's normal why the hell are they killing my christmas break by making me wait 3 weeks for a replacement. Hello- System replaced because of scratched disks = normal. WTF??

I think the most reasonable thing for me to do was include the disks with the ps3 and have them decide for themselves what is normal and what isn't. Obviously they don't like compensating. I would have been happy with a $100 blu-ray credit etc. Anyone still think I should fight this? Anyone ever have to send in a ps3 for service/replacement?

MS is the same way. Their console scratches discs, but good luck getting them to replace them.

I will say the PS3 scratching discs is definitely not normal. I have had my console most of this year and I have never noticed it scratching a disc. If you PS3 is scratching BD discs you definitely have a problem because those take extra effort to scratch.

Wow, you say the PS3 scratching discs isn't normal because it's never happened to you, but then you go on and say that the 360 scratching discs is a problem.

Using your logic, I should tell you that the 360 scratching discs isn't normal because I've had a 360 for a couple of years and I've never had a scratched disc.

I should also point out that I have a PS3 and it hasn't scratched discs either.

i've not heard much about the ps3 scratching discs. the ps2, yes, but not the ps3. but it doesn't matter if it's a common problem or not, only whether or not it happens to your particular discs! you should certainly expect some form of compensation from sony for their device scratching your discs.

if the discs still play just fine, i don't think you can reasonably expect compensation from Sony. if they were unplayable as a result of the PS3 scratching them, that would be a different story.

Does it really matter? Blu-rays have that required protective coating which should mean scratches don't matter...right?

Read much? I never said 360s scratching discs is normal or some kind of widespread problem. All I said was MS does not replace discs when they are scratched. This has been mentioned on places like Joystiq and is the experience of people I know that had to send in 360s for disc scratching.

I was just saying that Sony not replacing the scratched discs is not unheard of among console makers.

BTW, scratches on Blu-ray discs do matter. That coating makes it harder for them to scratch, but when they do get scratched the data layer is right on top so it is easy for even a minor scratch to ruin a disc. The protective coating is nice, but it is definitely not 100 % scratch proof.

Re: Ps3 scratching disks update/rant

Old thread, but I got a new camera recently and have now been able to take a photo of the long time problem I've had with BDs and the PS3. I've tried out various PS3s at various retailers, at various times since it has launched. And every single one of them does this to a disc upon ejecting:

Finding other people noticing this problem has been difficult. Those same markings show up every time. They rub off using a microfiber cloth, but I would love to know what they are and if the PS3 will ever stop doing that.

Re: Ps3 scratching disks update/rant

I have the last 80 gig before they released the PS3 slim and I have never had my system scratch a disk or game disk, but I rarely play movies with my PS3, I prefer to use it as a game machine and play my movies in a Blu-ray player.

The PS2 slim scratched the crap out of disk, ours ahd a cable for the drive that would ride up a rub on the disk. I noticed the last PS2 slim we bought had the cable located in a different area and eliminated the scratching.

I had this problem last year, and it stopped occurring once I used a can of compressed air to clean the dust off the unit. There's a proper way to clean it (can't recall where I read how to properly do this), so if you live in an area where dust accumulates rapidly, this may be the cause.

Is your PS3 positioned vertical or horizontal.

horizontal. And those aren't scatches, but just markings left every time the disc comes out. I can wipe them off, but I want to know why they are always on there. And keep in mind, I've tried out SEVERAL different PS3s at all different times, and I get the same results each time.

Not sure it would be dust either. Because each unit, even on day 1 of use, leaves the markings.

This is a common issue among any/all slot loading disk systems. It's one reason I avoid products with this type of drive if at all possible.

Re: Ps3 scratching disks update/rant

This is obviously the result of the disc sliding in/out of the tray, not spinning, so it could be as simple as adhesive from the felt strips on the loading slot coming off on the disc. Similar problems used to occur fairly frequently with the old iMacs, especially with thicker discs. You might try loading and unloading a series of 'junk' discs of different thicknesses (ie cheap flimsy discs up to full discs w/paper labels) and see if the results are different or if the stuff thins out over time. Good luck!

Had this issue happen the other day with my PS3 Slim. No problems since last September until then. I had 2 lines on my disc and they wiped off really easy. No clue what it was, but it doesn't seem to be doing it now. I haven't dusted in awhile, so that might be it. My system is vertical right now (seems to run cooler for me that way).

Anyway I've looked around online, and I've read a lot of people seem to think its grease/lubrication from the Blu-ray drive parts. I've never seen an optical drive leak stuff onto a disc, but who knows...

Re: Ps3 scratching disks update/rant

I've had the 80 GB PS3 since November of 2008 and don't recall having this happen to me once. There's a little bit of dust on the disc sometimes but I don't know if that's from being in the system or if it was there from the case.
