the perfect storm blu-ray?

Why is this only available on hd. It's distributed by WB. Reason I ask is I saw an ad for it saying it was coming soon to blu-ray. That was about a year ago.

Warner advertised The Shawshank Redemption as coming to HD DVD in summer 2006, and it still hasn't shown up either. We saw ads for a box set of The West Wing last summer too, and it hasn't materialized. Can't really rely on Warner's "coming soon!" ads.

They'll probably get around to a Blu-ray release eventually, although I was personally pretty let down by the quality of the transfer on HD DVD.

That's a shame. It's just odd that Warner chooses not to release both formats @ the same time. I guess we all need a little patience. Hopefully the blu-ray transfer will be better. I just watched under siege on bluray and it was a horrible transfer. By far the worst I've ever seen.

I don't think Blu-ray had launched by that point.

It'll almost certainly be the same transfer and even the same exact encode.

It can be for different reasons, like IME or PiP functions Blu-ray does not have at the moment. They just got around to releasing The Polar Express and T3 is coming out in January.

Does this particular movie have either of these? I don't think so but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't know about Polar Express, by T3 did have IME and PiP (which is being "faked"). I'm sure someone else could tell you, I would never buy/watch either of these movies.

As an owner of Perfect Storm on HD DVD, I can confidently say you're not missing much. There are some scenes where the HD shines, but the film takes place mostly at night, and combined with the grain effect, we have a film which looks just about the same as the regular DVD version.

So, you're not missing much.

The HD DVD features a TrueHD soundtrack, but the transfer is bobbed & not too impressive. Hopefully, this one will be corrected by Warner when it finally comes out on BD.

As someone else said, this was an early release - I think before BD hit the shelves. People have complained alot about the less than stunning release so i dare say a new version for both formats will appear or it will remain HD DVD exclusive.

OP, Keep in mind it has not been announced for release on Blu-ray. The only title that has is T3 (from the 20 or so 'HD DVD' exclusive ones at the moment).

There are still a few Warner titles that haven't shown up on Blu-ray yet(aside from the obvious big ones) that came out on HD DVD already. Some don't even have IME or anything that would preclude them from being released on Blu-ray. I think Warner said sales were so low for some titles that it wasn't worth pressing them to Blu-ray yet(but this was like 9 months ago).
