Purple Rain looks great in HD and the sountrack is still one of the best ever

Do you have the 2 disc SD to compare it to? I was tempted to grab this title, but just about every review that I could find said that there was barely any difference between the HD and the SD. All I need is little bit of encouragement to upgrade to the HD.

I never purchased the 2 disc set so I don't know if the picture is THAT much better. It's certianly not Transfomers quailty but like Goodfellas it looked pretty good for an older movie

It's too bad they couldn't have touched up the Purple Rain videos. They look horrible. Still, a great movie.

Warning! I received Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Fountain, and The Lake house. All 3 were ordered as 1 sided HD disc, and they reflect that on the case, but all 3 are old combo disc's!

I don't understand. If you received the HD/Standard DVD combo but only paid for the non-combo, what's wrong with that? This sounds like getting something extra and not having to pay for it! Can someone explain this to me?

Some people are having issues with Combo HD DVDs. Most are not, however.

Not to derail the discussion, but I've just received two Evan Almighty combos in a row via Netflix in which the two layers had literally become unglued from one another. Strangely, one of them actually played (although the load times were longer). I never liked combos in principle but this experience has turned me against them completely.

Can someone direct me to a thread that specifically discusses the relative merits and demerits of combos?

But with Netflix, most of the discs are so trashed that I don't know that this would be an acurate assessment of combo discs that are handled with care.

For some people, artwork on the disc itself is more important then content. While that may seem a bit strange, there are people who choose between Blu and HD based on box color as opposed to content also. Next thing I expect to see is people buying dvd's based on shrink wrap hue.

And there are some crazy people who bought a HD player to enjoy HD content. So when a new HD movie comes out and has a dvd stuck to it that they won't use because of the reason mentioned in the first sentence, they tend to get pissed when that is the only option.

I just got screwed today with the Bourne Ultimate disc that is a combo and came with a ton of free scratches. Now it's back to the store again to see if I can get at least a somewhat clean disc. The HD-Dvd camp really needs to do away with this combo shit. They also need to come up with some scratch resistant coating that at least allows the discs to get to your home without looking like a cat's scratching pole.

Was it a floater? I've never received combo HD DVDs that were scratched. Call me lucky, I guess, but we'll certainly find out when Amazon ships me the ton of HD DVDs I ordered, because about 4 of them are combos.

Regardless as to whether the hd-dvd is a combo disc or not, I expect mine to be flawless. I do look forward to the day when the qc on hd-dvd's is up to the standards of most sd-dvd releases.

A better scratch-resistant coating is one thing, but scratches from the production plant where the discs were pressed is another matter altogether.

Are you buying or renting? I have never had a scratch on any of the discs I own. This seems a little reactionary, IMO.

I do agree that combos just need to go away though.

I had the worst luck with my order of 4 DVDs: two of them (World Trade Center and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) both were heavily scratched. Neither were floaters, either, which makes it seem odd that they were so damaged. (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was a combo and scratched on BOTH sides.) So back they both go for replacements. At least Amazon returns are effortless: they send new ones immediately, instead of waiting to receive the ones you return.

I've had more problems with SD DVDS being scratched than HD DVDS.

Shouldn't this be the norm? At this point both high definition formats should be harder to scratch and have a bit better quality control out of the factory. So far every combo disc that I have received has had some sort of scratches or little dot marks on them.

I've had a few discs NOT LOOSE in the case that still contained scratches. Not surprisingly, all were Universal combo discs. Just going by past experience, Universal's quality control could use alot of improvement.
