I just really need to get the Mission Impossible: Ultimate Missions Collection on Blu-ray. I had an unopened copy of that on HD-DVD, but I returned it for store credit. It was purchased over a year ago, haha.

The Ultimate Missions Blu-Ray set is sold out at Amazon, but I got all three separately as they were still in stock that way. IIRC, there was really no price difference between getting the separately and getting the box.

Blu-ray.com visited the THX booth at CES. Here's an interesting snippet from their report:

"Another interesting tidbit of information is about the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As we all know, Paramount's deal does not cover Steven Spielberg films, and so Indy 4 is being prepped for Blu-ray Disc for release sometime late this year. Apparently, Paramount is reluctant to pony up the additional cost for the disc to be certified, so it may take George Lucas to personally step in and make it happen. Be sure to let Paramount know we want this!"

I'm not sure if this has been covered, and I didn't want to start a new thread, but whats up with the lack of Unrated Blu-rays?

I was in moviestop yesterday looking around, and saw the R rated versions of Punisher, Con-Air, of course Live Free Die Hard, and Pg-13 of Ultraviolet. At least Robocop made it :)

cardaway 01-09-08 10:00 AM

Does anybody think THX certification means anything anymore? I know I don't.

I dont give 2 sh|ts about it either.

WB Profile 1.1 titles coming soon.....

"Two titles specifically cited by Tsujishara as being prepped for Blu-ray release were 'Batman Begins', and the blockbuster 'Matrix' trilogy, although he stopped short of naming actual street dates."

THX is/was the Bose of media.

Wild Things, Bad Santa, American Psycho and Alien Vs. Predator are some unrated BD's I own off the top of my head.

The obvious answer to your question is the inevitable double dip.

Live Free or Die Hard Unrated seems like a lock on BD.

Not sure why Fox couldn't put the Unrated Mr. & Mrs. Smith out at leats seamless branched like they did with AvP.

In addition, the BD-J interactivity layer, based on Java, has continued to evolve since the introduction of Blu-ray Profile 1.0. This means that early players may have a buggy implementation and perhaps more importantly, they are not powerful enough to play the latest films properly.

When BetaNews asked developers of BD Live whether they were concerned about a backlash from early adopters who supported the format from the beginning, we were told: "They knew what they were getting into."

When BetaNews asked why these manufacturers rushed out players that were not fully capable and potentially buggy due to their BD-J implementation, the Blu-ray partner pointed blame across the room to HD DVD. "We should have waited another year to introduce Blu-ray to the public, but the format war changed the situation," he said. HD DVD was already coming and the BDA had no choice but to launch Blu-ray.
Nice!

RockStrongo 01-09-08 10:38 AM

HAHA blame it on the competition!! What a dumb ass!

Yavin 01-09-08 10:40 AM

Definitely. Hardware-wise, early adopters of Blu-Ray are just as screwed as HD-DVD owners.

I guess the PS3 is still safe and will not be affected by the evolution of BD-J as long as the firmware is upgraded when necessary?

matome 01-09-08 10:44 AM

Since we're doing selective bolding here. I'll add the one that is of importance to me:

He added that early Blu-ray owners can continue to do everything they could in the beginning: watch movies in high-definition.
I'm getting everything I want from my first gen players.

chanster 01-09-08 10:45 AM

This article's message is disgusting.

bunkaroo 01-09-08 10:49 AM

That bolded part seems a little inaccurate.

It's not the film that need the extra hardware to be played - it's the Java stuff. Of course if you can't even get through the stupid menu to get to the film, then yes, that's not good.

I still like using my BDP-S1 as I've had it over a year and have gotten quite used to it.
I'm going to try out 3:10 To Yuma, War and Sunshine (which I believe are all 1.1 titles) on the BDP-S1 tonight to see how it acts.

Worst case scenario, I'll fall back to my PS3 for those titles. I still prefer my S1 though, monolith that it is. :)

chanster 01-09-08 10:59 AM

Representatives at the Blu-ray booth at CES told BetaNews that the PlayStation 3 is currently the only player they would recommend, due to upcoming changes to the platform. But Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony have all been selling standalone Blu-ray players to customers.
Thats the shittiest thing I have ever seen. CES guys tell the educated people the truth, but the masses are getting horse-fed Blu is the perfect combination in commercials.

Plus how do the other CE companies feel like being shit on?

They should have known what they were getting into when they signed up. ;)

It's meant nothing to me since the original "Highlander" release on DVD.

So are we to assume that a BD Live standalone player will handle java better than a 1.1 player? I love my Panny BD30, but damn those java discs really choke that machine sometimes. And we'll be getting more and more discs with java, so if the BD50 handles them better, I may have to upgrade.

bunkaroo 01-09-08 02:14 PM

I don't know enough about BD-Live to say. Seems to me the speed issue has to be coming from some kind of hardware bottleneck, whether that's onboard memory or processing power.

If BD-Live requires more memory or processing power than 1.1, then I guess it may handle the Java stuff better.

I've also got my eye on the BD50, as I may get tired of waiting for DTS-HD on the PS3.

Damed 01-09-08 06:47 PM

I sincerely hope no one is surprised by this. This has been "known" about profile 1.0 for months and months.

It is extremely shitty, but I expect this kind of crap from Sony et al.

If they had done that bluray would have been stillborn, and that's why they rushed it.

kvrdave 01-09-08 07:02 PM

Everyone who took an interest in BD and HD-DVD knew from the begining that BD rushed out the door because of HD-DVD. We can't honestly act surprised about it. Sony was going as fast as they could with the PS3 because of the 360 and Wii coming out as well.

I agree that it is a shitty thing to say, but at least he spoke the truth. I think it is stupid to blame the competition for your own shortcomings, because in the end, they still screwed their own, but we all knew it.

jiggawhat 01-09-08 07:05 PM

JAVA is probably the worst programming language ever.

Amen my brother.

I *hate* java based apps. They are slow, bloated and buggy.
