Toshiba not region - free

I have a copy of HD-DVD Enemy at the gate (French version) and it won't play. I called toshiba service and was told that there players are not region- free. I thought HD-DVD was region free?

What player do you have?

That specific disc was known to have issue with first-gen machines I believe.
It plays fine on my A20. Haven't tried it on my A1.

Also, whoever told you that at Toshiba is an idiot. There is no region coding for HD DVD. However, HD DVD players will still obey region coding for DVD.

They aren't region free for regular DVDs, but they are for HD-DVDs.

There have been a lot of problems with that particular title ("stalingrad")

See the warning on this site:

Agreed. The HD DVD format is region-free. I have that Stalingrad HD DVD and have had no problem playing it on my A2, FYI.

I have a HD-A35 player.
Why would A20 play the movie and not the A35.
I bought the movie from xploited cinema before the A35 came out. and was told I could return it. Anyone know if the samsung BD-UP5000 Will be region-free?

To reiterate, there is no region coding for HD DVD.

The problem with this disc is likely related to how the disc is authored/made.

It's a disc issue. Read the thread I linked at AVS, the manufacturer is possibly even going to correct and reissue.

I repeat - It's NOT a player issue, it's a DISC issue.
