Feel free to adjust my numbers, but the price to buy in for 1080p is $399 for Blu-Ray, $199 for HD-DVD.
So $600 for a player, up to ~$30 for new releases, $18+ for catalog titles. Say you catch a couple of good deals and don't care about 1080p -> $99 for HD-DVD and maybe ?~$299 for Blu-Ray for $400 on players. What does everyone think a universal player and software would cost now? I might agree that it wouldn't necessarily beat the above combined prices NOW. In a couple years if HD discs don't surpass SD-DVD, I think 1 format would have been a cheaper way to go. It still would have had to compete against SD. That competition hasn't gotten very far yet with the current HD format war. |
