Feel free to adjust my numbers, but the price to buy in for 1080p is $399 for Blu-Ray, $199 for HD-DVD.

So $600 for a player, up to ~$30 for new releases, $18+ for catalog titles. Say you catch a couple of good deals and don't care about 1080p -> $99 for HD-DVD and maybe ?~$299 for Blu-Ray for $400 on players.

What does everyone think a universal player and software would cost now? I might agree that it wouldn't necessarily beat the above combined prices NOW. In a couple years if HD discs don't surpass SD-DVD, I think 1 format would have been a cheaper way to go. It still would have had to compete against SD. That competition hasn't gotten very far yet with the current HD format war.

I'm looking at things more as a casual customer who doesn't track weekly sales. Those are mostly catalog titles that are at least that cheap on SD-DVD ($15 or less).
