I wonder if the copies of Spider-Man 3 from the box set are included in the 130,000 total?

i think the best comparison will be HMM's numbers for both titles, rather than using any corporately announced numbers. that said, i still think comparing total sales of two different exclusive titles isn't all that meaningful.

You could wait for the official Nielsen data to make it official tomorrow but I can confirm that the 130 000 excludes the boxset.

WOW, if that is true Pro-b, this is quite the trump for the BD camp. Can you confirm if Spidey 3 with boxset numbers were more than 200k? Thanks once again for your insight.

It'll be interesting to see the numbers tomorrow, then, given how well highdefdigest reported that the trilogy pack sold by comparison on Amazon. This really is a pretty unique situation, given that it's a new release film being sold in two forms, though limited to a single HD format (unlike, say, the Mission: Impossible films last year).

One also wonders how many more box sets might've been sold had Sony provided the same "special edition" treatment for 1 and 2 that they gave 3, but that's a purely speculative topic for a whole other thread.

Gotta love the transformation from SD to HD. Shame it wasn't a better movie.

There's nothing like DVD-resolution shots to show what HD really looks like.

And to make those people who like to think that their up-converting DVD players look the same as HD/BD look just plain silly.

Is it just me, or did Thomas Haden Church eerily resemble Ernest P. Worrell without a hat or vest in this movie?

Qui Gon Jim 11-08-07 03:32 PM

Does this number include the units shipped with the new PS3 SKU?

No. I believe that was stated explicitly in the press release. Whether or not the Spiderman box set was included is less clear. The press release makes no mention of it, but an "insider" on a certain format-specific website claims that the numbers do not include the box set.

Here are SWEDE's shots which are notably better than the Spanish ones (1024x576):

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 is now showing up in retail stores. 4 of my local Circuit City stores now has this in stock. They also have a 10% off coupon if you do in-store pickup. I think I may pull the trigger on this one, especially since it does pass lossless audio via bitstream and is 1.1.

I did not have time to tweak these as I have/had a load of paperwork to do. Here's another one that I will just copy (since another person put them in my thread):

A second insider is going with a different number now suggesting that the total 130K for Spiderman does add the box but not the PS3 copy. In this case the numbers should look like this:

1. Spider-Man 3 (BD) 75,605
2. Spider-Man: The High Definition Trilogi (BD) 54,395
3. Transformers (HD-DVD) 23,755
4. Meet the Robinsons (BD) 6,668
5. 300 (BD) 4,960
6. Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer (BD) 3,803
7. Lincense to Wed (BD) 3,206
8. The Shining (BD) 3,107
9. Mr. Brooks (BD) 3,047
10. 2001: A Space Oddysey (BD) 2,933

Those were my exact thoughts. Looks great but like the last 2 Matrix movies, I can't stomach to watch any of them ever again...even if they are in HD.

That last screen shot provided by Pro-b with the black costume is freaking amazing.

These numbers are extraordinarily depressing for HD media as a whole, for various reasons.

Mr. Cinema 11-10-07 08:25 AM

I think I will pass on the Panasonic DMP-BD30. I just bought the Sony STR-DG910 receiver, which will pass audio via Mult-Channel PCM, but not decode the lossless formats. Since the Panny has 0 onboard decoders, it would be a waste for me, especially if we see a shift where BD titles begin using more TrueHD and less PCM. They are starting to pop up on newer releases. It's a shame too, as this player had some great features, though it lacked an ethernet port. I guess I'll wait to get a standalone, when I can have ALL of this:

-Profile 1.1 or above
-Ethernet Port
-On board TrueHD and DTS HD MA decoders!!!!
-Load times that match the PS3

I could be waiting awhile. It seems as though the studios want you to buy a receiver that does the decoding. I could've gone with the Onkyo 605, but I've read about heating and popping noises occuring with this model. The Sony was all positive and it does have 3 HDMI. I'm happy with MC PCM for the forseeable future.

Very depressing. PS3's install base has climbed much faster than any of the stand alone players, but it certainly doesn't seem to help disc sales.

We are almost at the end of the year and a movie selling 100k is still a big deal. Not much has changed since the beginning of the year.

I tend to believe the second insider as the Transformers/300 numbers make more sense, rather then 300 on Blu-ray selling 2.5x more then the last several weeks.

As of this very moment the first insider's info has not been retracted. And as you could see I have not kept the second "read" away from this thread. When the initial number was announced I confirmed it for TALK. And since I am not the source I have now supplied the second chart as well.
