Upconverting DVD's on PS3

I just purchased the new Transformer movie on DVD to play on my PS3. I know it upconverts the video but does it keep the black bars on the top and bottom in doing so? What I mean is it looks like watching a standard DVD on any regular tv with the letterbox bars on the top and bottom. So when the PS3 upconverts the picture it keeps the black bars or is one of my settings not correct? Thanks.

Transformers' aspect ratio will require black bars on any 16:9 display. This is normal.

The only difference is the bars would be "thicker" on a standard 4:3 TV.

Ok. That's what I figured but I just wanted to make sure it was doing what it was supposed to do. It does look nice but I really have to upgrade my sound system. It really lacks punch without a sub and some speakers.
