Greenmonkey, So before 1080p tvs came out, all tvs were actually only 780p? Then why were some stations broadcasting 1080i & some 780p for their HD broadcasts? And why does everyone debate whether 1080i or 780p is better if they're all only displaying 780p according to you? And why did so many PS3 players have a problem at launch with Resistance because it only had 780p & would revert to 480p if your tv only had 1080i (which apparently enough people had that there were alot of threads about it). If they're all really 780p why do some only have 1080i & 480p and not even do 780p? I don't see why my receiver or PS3 would read it through HDMI as having both resolutions if it didn't really? I've seen the 1080i/780p debate for HD stations, PS3 & 360 settings & never once have I heard someone say that everyone was actually only seeing 780p no matter what?

Really, not to sound rude, but you need to go do your homework about HD display technology. There is no way for a reasonable to person to even begin to address this mess.

CRTs and CRT RPTVs were 1080i from the very beginning. Most LCDs, plasmas, and DLPs were either 480p or 720p until a few years ago.
CRT HDTVs could only display 480p or 1080i - they either scaled 720p or didn't accept it at all. That's why some PS3 folks with CRT RPTVs had a major beef with the early PS3 games - a lot of CRT HDTVs don't accept 720p.
Just look at the stats on your TV. You will see something called "native resolution". That's your TV's resolution. If you have an LCD based television it is 720p or 1080p (some small LCD TVs being ED). I'm not talking about everyone. Just you couple of folks saying you have 1080i LCDs. That isn't true. They don't exist. LCDs aren't interlaced. Period.

So, I'm watching Reign Over Me BluRay, and check my tv display & it says 1080i. So it's lying & not really displaying 1080i? And on Comcast, some stations are displayed & labeled by my tv on-screen display as 780p & some are 1080i. If it's just displaying 780p no matter what, why does it say otherwise. And why would almost all HD broadcasts be in 1080i and not 780p then? And why would my upconverting dvd player (made before 1080p) offer 1080i if it's not really displayable? And again the debate on many sites (gaming & movie) about whether the games/movies look better at 780p or 1080i (since 360 & PS3 let you choose), why didn't anyone ever say that no HDTVs actually display 1080i? I got my first HDTV almost 8 years ago, and just about all signals are 1080i. FOX was 780p, but they may have changed by now. If before 1080p arrived all HDTVs were actually showing 780p, why would they pick 1080i for their signal? And if I pick 780p on my 360, my tv says it's 780p. If I pick 1080i, the tv says it's 1080i. So both are lying? And through HDMI, my receiver & PS3 both state that my tvs max resolution is 1080i?

They might have been referring to you saying 780p, instead of 720p.
edit: I guess not as I totally skipped the previous post.

OP: are you sure that those two discs are the only ones that are distorted? Even the 2.35:1 titles aren't? The only explanation that makes sense to me and others is that the PS3 is outputting a 16x9 image but the TV is set for 4:3. Therefore, the TV is vertically stretching everything to fill the screen, but for some reason you aren't noticing it in 2.35:1 titles. It may be that you see black bars and assume it's correct.
Do you have any other 1.85:1 titles and do they look the same as these two? Are your PS3's menus filling the screen? They should appear letterboxed (vertically squeezed by the TV) if things are set up correctly.

As to your suggestion that sounds like it could be the problem. I am away from my house till sunday night but I will check. I own plenty of blu-ray and hd-dvd but those are the only two movies to play in full screen. So I will check and see if I have any other 1.85:1 movies to try out. Also my ps3 menu is filling the screen. So it sounds like what you suggested might be the problem.
If this is the case would anyone by chance know how to fix it?

EXACTLY! I have a 720P projector and it says 1080i as that is the HD signal it is receiving, then it converts it to 720P.

it turns out you were very right about 1:85 movies playing in fullscreen. Lost in translation is also shot in 1:85 and that played full screen. I don't suppose anyone knows how to fix this do they?

YOUR TV SAYS 1080i BECAUSE THE SOURCE IS SENDING OUT 1080i and it is accepting it. Your TV will downrez 1080i for you can get an image regardless of the source resolution.
Again, 1080i exists because CRT HDTVs were 1080i/480p devices devices. 720p likely exists because LCDs and Plasmas and DLPs were 720p devices. 1080p is relatively new - that is why it isn't part of the broadcast HDTV standard.
Here's a good read for you. Read the first few pages.

I watched my copy the other day on my PS3, and it looked fine. That's a really weird problem you're having. You should maybe try calling Sony's customer support, or try exchanging your disc for another one.

So it's embarrasing that I don't know how the inside of my tv works & that even though it said 1080i it wasn't. But as I asked, why would HD stations all be in 1080i if it's not something that most hDTVs actually display? And what was the debate when the 360 came out about which looked better if the tvs were displaying both the same anyway? People & sites (IGN) were saying they could see differences in the 2 modes. But shouldn't an HDTV show both exactly the same if it doesn't do 1080i?
And what an idiot that I made a mistake & put 780. I don't know how that could have happened since both other resolutions end in 80. What a completely ridiculous mistake that I haven't seen hundreds of times in other posts. Although I'm never the ahole to point it out to feel superior.

You really, really, really, need to go do some hw on the subject bud.
Here...I'll dumb it down for ya:
LCD-displays only displays images in progressive formats AND only in one, native format. Your television will accept progressive AND interlaced signals, but it will either downconvert or upconvert to the native resolution of your television.
If you have a 720p television then ALL incoming signals will be displayed as 720p, regardless of where the signal is coming from.
Really, this is "HDTV 101"...

If you guys cannot post without being rude, then don't bother posting at all. Not everyone here will know as much about HD as daily posters. If you know how to help, please help. If you are just coming here to make fun of someone, or to belittle them, then think twice.

Do us all a favor, put the movie in the PS3, and start playing it. Take a picture of your TV with the movie playing, as well as a picture of the DVD Case, and both sides of the DVD itself and post them on here.
Descriptions are much harder to understand than pictures, espically when not everyone has the same knowledge of terminology.
