Kubrick: which version/format are you getting and why?

I'm getting:

Blu-ray:
2001
The Shining

HD DVD:
Eyes Wide Shut
A Clockwork Orange

2001 and The Shining are on sale at amazon.com for $18.95. A Clockwork Orange artwork looks better with the red case. And chose Eyes Wide Shut for HD for no reason.

Edit: I forgot to choose Clockwork Orange in the poll. Dammit.

I'm getting all but Full Metal Jacket, and on BD because I still feel that BD has the better chance of winning the format war in the long run, despite Paramount's move.

The only reason I haven't ordered FMJ is because I don't think it's been confirmed yet that it will be remastered. I have the first edition and I'm not going to buy it again just for the features.

Adam Tyner 10-06-07 09:53 AM

I ordered everything but Full Metal Jacket -- I already have the original HD DVD and want to hear more about the release before picking up another copy -- but I pre-ordered everything else on Blu-ray. I picked Blu-ray just because my PS3 runs so much faster than my Toshiba HD-A1.

Cartload 10-06-07 11:02 AM

I'm waiting to make sure that FMJ has a newer transfer before I get it on Blu-Ray, but I preordered 2001, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining on Blu-Ray because it's faster and outputs at 1080p/24. Also, for some reason it can take a long time before my A/V receiver recognizes the HDMI signal from my HD-A2.

cartman 10-06-07 11:35 AM

I had been purchasing all identical dual releases on Blu-ray as of late (since the PS3 was easier to work with than my A1), but now that I'm trying to convince myself to get an A35 (for a faster load and bitstream capabilities), I've been ordering the HD-DVD versions instead. Which movies I'll be getting depends wholly on WHV. I placed an order a long while ago for EWS, 2001, and Veronica Mars season 3 (on standard DVD). If they bother to ship it before my Amazon order with only EWS and VM ships, then I'll be getting both EWS and 2001. If Amazon ships first, just EWS for me for now.

Doughboy 10-06-07 11:53 AM

I'm not sure yet. I normally get the HD-DVD version if all things are equal(I assume the Dolby TrueHD/PCM tracks are identical).

But A Clockwork Orange will require 2 discs for the HD-DVD version compared to just one for the Blu-ray.

And Eyes Wide Shut will presumably use seamless branching to include both the R-rated and unrated cuts. I have no idea whether my PS3 or XA2/A1 players will handle that better.

I guess my best bet is to just wait for the reviews to start coming in.

I'm doing everything he said, except I am also getting Full Metal Jacket.

All 5 on BD.

All in Blu-Ray but the The Shinning! Not a big fan it, will save for the after Christmas spree.

The Shining, 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut on HD-DVD because... it's the right thing to do. ;)

I don't care much for Full Metal Jacket and genuinely dislike Clockwork Orange.

Just to be clear, the movie is on disc 1 and the extras are on disc 2, right? If they can fit EWS on one HD-DVD, ACO should fit :/ .

When it comes to Warner, I pick HD-DVD discs because I don't want them to go BR exclusive. I've preordered all but Clockwork Orange, which was a good movie, but I don't have any urge to watch it again.

PopcornTreeCt 10-06-07 01:28 PM

All on HD-DVD

Almost exactly what I did... except I still pre-ordered the Full Metal Jacket BD just to get it in the Amazon pipeline for release-date delivery. I'm ready to cancel that one if early reviews say the PQ is identical to the current HD DVD.

vcuram 10-06-07 01:42 PM

I preordered The Shining and 2001 in HD from Columbia House. I'll get CO on HD also. I don't like EWS or FMJ, unless they made a copy of FMJ with just the first half hour.

Giles 10-06-07 01:46 PM

HD-DVD of course.

FusionX 10-06-07 02:30 PM

Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining, and A Clock work Orange on Blu-Ray, probably FMJ and 2001 on Blu down the road.

That's correct. The movie is on Disc 1. If I got the Blu-ray version, it would pretty much be for the convenience of not having to insert the 2nd disc to watch the extras.

It's the same reason I got Smallville Season 6 on Blu-ray. Only 4 discs for all 22 episodes instead of 5 on the HD-DVD set.

Sparrow 10-06-07 04:30 PM

I've pre-ordered all 5 on BD and looking forward to viewing each movie.

Maxflier 10-06-07 05:06 PM

Just Eyes Wide Shut for me, and it will be the HD DVD version.

wewantflair 10-06-07 05:09 PM

All on HD DVD, since my Harmony remote doesn't control my PS3.

DeanoBKN 10-06-07 05:53 PM

Just The Shining on HD

PhantomStranger 10-06-07 08:40 PM

All 5 for me on Blu-ray discs. I'm hoping that FMJ is remastered.

mdc3000 10-06-07 09:03 PM

I'll buy all 5 on BD.

Vipper II 10-06-07 09:18 PM

The Shining and 2001 on Blu-ray.
