Sony 5 Disc Rebate

The current Sony 5 free BRD rebate expires on 9-30. Do we know yet what titles will be offered on the new rebate? Of course Sony could decide not to offer a new rebate but I highly doubt that seeings how Toshiba is said to be continuing their rebate offer with a line up of new (and better) titles to select from.

I have absolutely no idea. Could it be their upcoming player (set to be released in November I think).

I didn't want to create a new thread so I figured I'd bump one and this is the first one I saw regarding the 5 free disc deal.

How long did it take people to get theirs? I can't remember when I sent off but I think it's been two months and I've seen nothing. Is there a number to call to find out what's going on? I mean if they haven't sent mine I much rather they give me the choices on the current selection sheet rather than the shit I'm getting.

Here's the website where you can check the status of your rebate.

Well, it says my order is still in progress and I'm quite sure some of the movies they're sending me aren't the ones I checked. Like the Guardian. I sure as hell didn't want that. I didn't want most of the movies I did check, but I wanted them more than the ones I did.

In my latest post at my "DVD Guy" blog, I speak about this situation, after talking to BDA spokesman and Pioneer's Senior VP, Andy Parsons.

Great. Status is "In Process"...

That really doesn't tell me anything.

Called on mine I sent in late July. Still "in process" and "due to the overwhelming response, etc., etc." basically, still waiting.

Why don't companies prepare for these things? They do make these offers to the public in order to get business, right? Not so that there employees can sit around doing their nails and shooting the shit. Mine is in process and I just sent it in about a month ago. Now let's see how long it actually takes to get the movies.

They don't prepare because they don't NEED to.

You'll sit and stew in impotent quiet rage until the discs come to your door. You have no choice other than not send away for the rebate in the first place.

One of the reasons I bought the fucking PS3 in the first place is that this rebate was supposed to be better/quicker than the HD DVD one. If I had known it would take 3+ months I may have held off on it.

They both seem to be taking a shitload of time.

Thanks for the update Dave. Though you may want to call ol' Andy back, cuz like I said above the titles that it shows on my order aren't the ones I recall checking at all.

Thanks for the link. It's good to know that my material was accepted and it's for the movies that I requested. I have purchased so many BRD and HD-DVD discs that I have plenty to keep me busy, so the wait isn't killing me. I'm relieved just to know it's in process with no problems.

Oh, I didn't call him; he called me.

My e-mails to other people were forwarded to him, and so he had my contact info but I don't have his.

But I would call the phone # in my story, 800-72-DISNEY, and tell them that you see the status but that the titles are screwed up, and can they fix them?

Did you keep photocopies of everything you mailed off, including the form with the titles checked off that you wanted? That's something precious few people seem to do, but I've learned that in any rebate situation you want to keep proof of EVERYTHING.

It is a relief to see that they have received your rebate materials. The mail system has become less and less reliable despite the increased postage. Also, you are basically screwed if your information gets lost between here and there and there is no recourse. I am also happy to see that they are processing the 5 movies that I selected and not 5 random titles that they decide to throw at me. Now I'm just hoping that my HD-Dvd rebate materials make it there safe and sound. I do believe that both the Blu-Ray and HD-Dvd rebates are in the same town in Texas. I know the one for Blu-Ray is in El Paso, Texas and I think the HD-Dvd is as well. Thats like two opposing armies having their ammunition made in the same town.

Companies do rebates because they get the benefit of the incentive ("Five free discs, Wow!") but many customers don't get around to sending in the rebate form and necessary proof of purchase. That's money in the pocket of the sponsoring company. I can't recall the figures off-hand, but the response rate on rebates is shockingly low, so it's a great gimmick for the company.

These rebate offers are usually farmed out to companies that specialize in them. They don't just handle your rebate deal but many others besides (so the employees aren't necessarily sitting idle while you stew). In the case of cash rebates, sitting on the rebate forms for eight or ten weeks allows the fulfilling company to work the float (earn interest on the money). With disc rebates, the fulfilling agents probably have to rely on the studios to supply the needed discs; they don't just buy them from Amazon.

Much as I hate rebates, I always, always, send in for them because to not do so is to be fleeced (one has already done the price reduction calculation when buying the product). And I copy everything I send in so I can keep track of whether and when I am supposed to get the rebate. And I call when the deadline passes.

So after like 3 months my order finally shows as being shipped as of November 2nd... yet here it is 8 days later and I still haven't received. I guess they're sending them by carrier pigeon.

I think they "ship" in batches. So while it says "shipped" for you, it may mean its sitting ina warehouse, ready to go out in one of those "batches". 4 months now for my HD DVD movies I still have 3 more rebates to send in as well.

I got mine the other day... I guess they ran out (?) of Babel and gave me "Happy Feet" instead. I'm not thrilled, since that was the title I wanted most from this promotion. They inclosed some "sorry, that title is no longer available" note in the shipment.

Pretty much sucks to get Happy Feet as a choice. I wish they would have provided a somewhat reasonable substitution...

Mine came in earlier this week. Expect to receive them in the near future.
