I don't think it was mentioned. But I thought jiggawhat said the '08 release would be. I still would like both versions. I loved the theaterical cut.

Very excited about this. Everything I've read has said that the director's cut is much better than the theatrical (which is still my top movie for 2007).

If this is the director's cut, looks like I'll have to buy the dvd to own the theatrical, since I believe HD DVD has trouble with seamless branching.

I was sort of hoping we'd get an HD release before 08'. The movie was one of my Top 5 of this year and I passed on getting the SD release in hopes of getting a HD release soon.

Warner holds the rights to this for UK and Japan along with a number of other countries, it will be an easy import on BD in that case.

That is a bit of a disappointment. But I think the major point for those holding out on the DVD release is the all the new extra features.

'director's cut' doesn't mean 'a shitload of time/scenes added to the film'.
just because fincher may have had a 3 hour version of the film at one point doesn't mean that was his final cut.
don't forget, ridley scott's director's cut of alien is actually shorter than the theatrical release.

Semantic clarification: Ridley Scott has been very clear that even though the 2003 edition of Alien is labelled by the studio as a "Director's Cut", that he was perfectly happy with the original 1979 version and only made any changes because the studio forced him to so that they could re-market the movie.

I don't recall him saying that in the commentary on the quadrilogy set. I'll have to dig it out again to see what his comments were.

Scott actually does a little video intro where he talks about it. Can't remember if it plays automatically when you choose the "Director's Cut" or if you have to select it by itself . . .

Scott always seems to have really bitter words for the studio on his Director's Cuts. I remember he had a few sour notes on both Kingdom of Heaven and Alien.

The track record that Ridley Scott has had with studios has been atrocious, though. Is there another director -- especially one of his stature -- who's had so many films compromised by studio interference, then given another chance later to restore their own version? In the case of "Alien", it was kind of the reverse happening, of course, but something like half of his movies have had some kind of eventual "Director's Cut" release. That's gotta be frustrating.
